I've found that being flexible and adaptible is most important to me, as everyone learns in a different way. I place a lot of importance on following student interest and goals as well, since it doesn't matter how great your instruction is if you're bored and don't want to keep playing. I think every student should get as much out of their lesson experience as they want, whether that means a more casual experience where you're not practicing too much throughout the week, or holding my student more accountable if they express more ambitious goals. A typical drum lesson for beginners, child or adult, will always start with an interest inventory. I would like to gauge the students' musical interests to shape the long term lesson plan. I like to find some of the student's favorite bands/songs to draw examples and teach from. Snare fundamentals such as paradiddles, flams, rolls, etc. will be taught as well as short and easy drum kit beats. Students will be introduced to drum kit sheet music to help visualize, but the focus of drum kit lessons would be on developing the ear to be able to pick up music quickly. Read More

For beginning piano students, I start them with a variety of materials, beginning with John Thompson's piano books, along with stanzas of finger exercises to develop dexterity. But more importantly for me, is that I understand that people, especially now, want to start playing songs as soon as possible. So, I immediately teach them chords and scales.
