I have taught the drums in a variety of settings for 15 years. In Australia I worked for the South Australian Government in the Instrumental Music Service for 3 years. I provided group drum lessons to students ranging from elementary to senior high school age with a total of 40 lessons each week, at 10 different schools to over 100 students! My first paid show was when I was 9 years old and got to play percussion for Chuck Mangione. I made $200 and I was hooked. I knew this what I had to be doing. I've toured the united stated with Buckets and tap Shoes and other artists, toured Japan in 2012 and was given the opportunity to play at the famous Blue Note, Body and Soul and other jazz clubs. My main focus of teaching is on the student, and on developing and expanding their existing musical interests. I develop a lesson plan and schedule that begins with the musical interests and passions of the student, their favorite bands, favorite songs and musical styles. From there I take each of their favorite pieces of music and demonstrate how the building blocks of music were used to create each, and how they can not only recreate their favorites, but start to create their own musical identity. I teach from a feel and improvisation stand point. I do start with basic rhythm studies but I love to allow for my students to explore the kit and their own comfort levels. It creates what I feel to be a sense of intimacy between them and the instrument. I believe the best tool is MUSIC. Playing along with music or musicians will ultimately help the most. But fundamentals are a must.
