My goal as a teacher is to avoid any type of dogmatic "one size fits all" curriculum.  I always want to know what music the student enjoys and build my lesson plans based on their tastes.  Chords can be physically challenging for beginners so I like to work with single-note melodies early on so that the student isn't quickly discouraged.  Learning chords becomes the medium-term goal.  As for the long-term, I will then use specific songs as examples for how music theory works in the context of their favorite bands. I believe every beginner student must approach music with a desire to understand the core fundamentals of Classical music including music theory and history. As a teacher, it is my duty to keep the student interested and make the lesson plans enjoyable and fun. A balance between student and teacher is important in terms of goals, desires and methods. For beginning piano students, I often get them started with the Faber piano series, then incorporate music theory along with their song requests. For beginning fretted string students (guitar/bass/ukelele), I like to start with the Hal Leonard method book to get started with reading notation, so that we cover more than just tabs and chords. For drum/percussion students, I'll have them start with a combination of Syncopation by Ted Reed and Peter Erksine's Drumset Essentials Volume 1. Read More

My teaching experience dates back from high school days teaching church, college, university choirs, and eventually soloists or ensemble group. I have had groups who become champions in multiple competitions, I have had students who became queens of jazz vocal competitions, I have students who eventually became professional musicians and vocal artists, and I coach too while they are in a recording studio especially with first timers. Some of my students love to write their own original songs and I help them be able to choose the right vocabulary, rhymes, rhythm, melody and all. Read More

I believe in adhering to the needs of the student, be it ear training, sight reading, or visual learning. Music is a complex and beautiful journey. I believe in providing students with all of the skills they need to acheive their goals. Some people want to play jazz, some people want to perform, and some people just want to strum songs they can sing along too...it is all music, and my job is to help people express that. Read More

Instruments: Guitar Drums

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I learned drums first, it was my first interest, then guitar because I loved to sing and write songs as well and I need to accompany myself and drums just was't cutting it! LOL I also learned piano and bass to accompany myself in my original songs as I record and my Customized Song Business has a full band recording listing and I am the full Band!

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
A normal lesson for me in either drums or guitar consists of half hour time slot learning exercises from the chosen books , new concept lesson and duets with me or playing along to streaming music of your choice or my choice. We incorporate the lessons learned into the songs we choose. Fun , fun fun!!!!!!!

When will I start to see results?
If your child is practicing in between lessons you will see results in a couple of weeks. They will know how to play either instrument exercises, or play a familiar melody or song or play along with a song. They should in a few weeks be able to explain some of what they are learning.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I was inspired by my 6th grade teacher who on Fridays in Catholic school bought in a guitar and sang songs with us in the afternoon before we went home. I was inspired again by a drummer in our church who was awesome and spoke to him about lessons and he gave me his practice pad and phone number of his drum teacher. The rest is Hisrory!

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
I suggest the student practice at least 3 to 5 times per week by reviewing over the lesson from the week before and also weeks prior to review as well. Plus be sure to play along to songs you enjoy if you are at the level of playing your instrument along with streaming music or videos. If you are still a novice and you have songs you would like to learn I will try my best to include them in your lesson so you can play along in some capacity either by playing melody notes, easier chords or I can send you a simple video of me playing the song for you to duet to.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child is asking questions about a particular instrument or enjoys watching others play that instrument or asks you about learning a particular instrument they may be interested in learning how to play that instrument. Set up a trial lesson with a music teacher to find out!
