For Guitar I feel that it is best for everyone to start out learning classical and then branch out to other styles. However, I , as a teacher want to teach everything if I can , while at the same time really focusing on what the students goals are in learning to play and what music gets them excited about playing. So I will use standard guitar teaching materials such as studies from Sor and Giuliani , or Segovia scales , or certain method books by Hal Leonard , Scott Tennant etc...but each student is different and my approach is focused on tailoring everything to each student specifically. Luckily I was taught by not only very high skill level players, but also by charismatic individuals that were also very good educators. As an educator, my main focus is to emulate their masterful ways of teaching and incorporate that into my program. I use various methods: how to read music, hear music and create music. Ear training is super important to me as it allows the student to learn "feel". Read More

For beginning students, I prefer to use the Bastien piano method. This serious comes in 4 levels and is very thorough The Bastien series offers numerous books for each level in addition to the lesson book. Each level comes with a recital book, a arepertoire book, and a theory book for students to write in. The solo repertoire book is exciting because it showcases the child's ability to interpret concepts learned in the lesson book. Read More

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Your child is ready to start when he or she is excited about starting any instrument. If they are passionate about music performances and even start taking everyday household objects and turn them into instruments they are ready to do some lessons
When will I start to see results?
Results are predicated upon how much the student practices. You can teach all day but if there is no application then you will never see any results.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Yes. I was introduced to music in elementary school when a string ensemble came to my school to recruit students for the string program. The teacher who led the group was a music teacher that I will neve forget.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I chose viola because I never heard of it. I was aware of a violin, a cello and bass, but not viola. I realized that violas were scarce and I made a good choice. I love the sound of the viola.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
My most accomplishments were the many years of sitting principle in Mississippi Youth Symphony Orchestra and being chosen to play in the youth string quartet. It allowed me many performance opportunities playing in places that I never thought of. Also, performing in community orchestras and with world-renowned soloists such as Placido Domingo and Doc Severison.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
My dream viola solo is the Stamitz viola concerto. Unfortunately, I was working on it at one point but due to switch in viola instructors I never completed it.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I enjoy playing classical, spiritual and pop. I was trained as a classical violoist, I value highly my religious beliefs and love the music that comes from it and pop just gives me that upbeat excitement that I like to play.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
Surprisingly, I do play another instrument. It is called a shofar. The shofar is an ancient Jewish instrument that has many purposes. I started playing it because it was an expression for the ministry that I oversee.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
I inherited my musical abilities from my father who was a former trombonist and drum major in high school. However, he didn't continue it. There are other singers in my family, but I am the only family member that I believe that ever went as far as I have.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
There is a saying that goes like this, "Practice makes perfect". I want to challenge that statement with what one of my former teachers taught me, "Perfect practice makes perfect". If you practice a piece incorrectly it will not be perfect. If you practice right then your performance will be perfect.
