One of the things I love about teaching is watching my students grasp the musical concepts I teach, as well as see how they all relate. Each student progresses at their own pace, some faster, some slower than others. I tweak my teaching style to meet each student's unique abilities, so as to assist them in reaching their potential. Together with teaching my students the basic concepts of music, I also work with them on musical concepts and types of music that they are interested in. Read More

I teach from 4 years old to adults, novice to advanced levels. My lessons are totally personalized to meet each student's desire, needs and capability. The pace of the lessons should be adjusted for each student. I review and access each student's understanding and progress in each lesson, and design a personalized assignment and lesson plan for the next lesson. Acknowledging accomplishment makes the student confidence and fuel the student's desire to progress. Read More

I have been teaching for over 30 years, and I love working with children. Regular practice is important so that students can see progress and reap the rewards that come with it. I meet the students where they are at, trying to work with their particular style of learning. My lessons are based in classical music, but we learn many different styles of music as they progress. The teaching association I belong to has four festivals a year, which I encourage my students to participate in, where they perform pieces and receive constructive feedback, helping them to grow as musicians and to become comfortable playing for others. As an accomplished performer and dedicated voice teacher, I find immense joy and fulfillment in imparting my knowledge of vocal arts. My journey in music began with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the esteemed University of Kentucky, followed by a Master of Music in Vocal Performance with a focus on opera. These rigorous academic pursuits have equipped me with a deep understanding and proficiency in both classical and popular music genres. Read More

Most schools use the Hal Leonard Essential Elements and I tend to focus on this method as supplemental instruction but other methods are fine as well especially if the student is already working through a particular method book. For young students I encourage a mix of formal music instruction with music the student enjoys. Nothing unlocks a love of learning like discovering how your favorite music works! Adult students are welcome to tailor their lessons to their musical goals whether that's learning Bach or Breaking Benjamin! Read More

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Yes. As I previously mentioned, I've had several students go on to become music majors at college. Some making a living at music. And some winning their school's talent contest. I really enjoy my students playing a piece they have written. I encourage composition and teach how to compose, when the student is ready.
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Correct fingering is quite important on piano, guitar and bass guitar. On piano, playing two different parts can be challenging. Reading two different clefs can be confusing and difficult to some students. Guitar and bass guitar are initially, painful to play. Hand muscles need to be trained and strengthened. Callouses need to develop.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I am very progressive but I teach to the individual student. All students, and people, are unique, and I customize my lessons to fit the students wants and needs and personality. Other considerations are the students time, and what their goals are with music. Cookie cutter methods don't work for me at all. I've taught several students with Autism, Asperger's, and various learning disabilities, with great success.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
I teach my students to 1. Practice shortly after the lesson, so the student remembers the lesson. 2. If they have a problem with a measure or section, to stop, analyze, and fix the part. Break it in to small pieces, and figure it out, and once it is correct, play it over and over to get it in your muscle memory. 3. Just playing through a song, skipping over the mistakes, is NOT practicing or learning.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I have been fortunate enough to have toured the world, several times, with performers of all levels of success and popularity. I have worked, in the recording studio , doing countless recordings, with all types of artists. I've written, produced, and recorded commercial spots, for several large advertising agencies, through the years. I love performing and entertaining people. I also love teaching music. There is nothing like music. I feel that, us older, experienced players, have a duty to pass the torch.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
When I was quite young, I would see an organ or piano, and they always fascinated me. I loved the sound and the fact that the instrument can act like an entire orchestra. I picked up guitar, in college, and then bass. Understanding keyboard and piano, which is music theory laid out in front of you, I was able to teach myself both guitar and bass.
