My musical journey started at the age of 8. I took classical piano lessons for about 5 to 6 years and during that time, I learned about the fundamentals and building blocks of music theory as well as how to read, sight-read, and transpose music. My love for music though began when I picked up the guitar at age 13. I had always naturally gravitated towards the guitar because of its portability (compared to the piano) as well as the full sound it was able to yield despite being a smaller instrument coupled with the fact that there are some many interesting styles and ways to play it. Instruments: Bass Guitar Double Bass
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
It was entirely by accident. I loved music as a kid, and I was trying to learn how to play the guitar. I was 21, and I was strumming a guitar in the garage of my friends house, his dad had told me I was strumming really hard on the guitar. He told me, I should try the bass. Ever since then, I have been obsessed with the instrument. Eventually I moved on to upright bass when I had the money and skills to play the instrument.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
Well it's number of musical accomplishments I am really proud of. The first being in the pit band for Cypress College's rendition of "Grease". The theater department had wanted to perform "Grease" in 2018, and I had been performing with their jazz ensemble. The leader of our ensemble gave the job to play bass for the pit band, and it was an amazing experience. I got to work with phenomenal musicians, see the incredible actors, dance and act, and hear the roar of the crowd during the really exciting pieces. Another accomplishment, I am proud of is receiving a scholarship from Friends of Jazz, during my days of community college. I had doing well in the jazz ensemble I was in, transcribing the music we had been given, and the band director took notice. I didn't know at the time but he had signed me up for the scholarship, and I was incredibly grateful. It was for 400 dollars, and made me feel I could really make some money and receive acclaim for my musical skills. Even though it's not really considered a musical accomplishment, but transferring to a university in music performance for me feels like an accomplishment. I am really proud of the work I have done, and I have never imagined I would be able to transfer to a university for music, on top of that, I am also receiving some scholarship money for my music studies.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My first upright bass teacher was Roger Shew. When I was at my community college, I wanted to take lessons so I emailed Mr. Shew so I could begin taking my lessons. Seeing him play with ease all of the things he taught and told me to work on was incredibly inspiring. He doubled on both jazz and classical studies. He had the best walking bass line feel I have ever listened to, and could effortlessly play with a bow, classical or jazz music. Mr. Shew made me want to be a better musician, and I did my best every day to improve. Unfortunately, he passed two years ago and I was deeply heartbroken. I miss him everyday and I wish to pass down the important information he gave me onto my future students. I am currently taking lessons with the incredible Luther Hughes, who has had a phenomenal career as a jazz bassist and I hope I can teach the information that he has given me and pass it down to future students.
