2016- Fullerton College Friends of Jazz Scholarship

Overview:

I'm a aspiring musician and educator living in the north Orange County area, in sunny California. I started playing music fairly late, at the age of 21. I took jazz lessons at my local community college. I eventually took up the double bass as well, and improved my skills enough to be in the jazz ensembles at my community college. I just recently completed my transfer requirements and I will be attending Cal State Fullerton in the coming fall semester, majoring in Music Performance. I am glad I'm still on my music journey, while other of my classmates and associates have given up, I am still continuing my studies. I look forward to learning more as a musician, and eager to teach my future students the things I have learned that have made me the musician I am today.

EXPERIENCE

Although I have no experience teaching music, I do have experience tutoring young students in other subjects. It was rewarding work and helped pay the bills, but I was not fullfiled. I wanted to teach music, but I didn't have the chances or desire to really do it. I decided recently that I wanted to teach music, I loved it so much I want to show willing students the beauty of music. I truly feel that music plays an important part in everybody' life. If I can mold a young persons mind, and show them the fun and art in honing your craft musically, I feel I am truly making difference in the world.

METHODS USED
I believe in the four T's of bass playing. Tunes, which is your repertoire of music you must have ready to play and be willing to expand everyday.< Technique, having the ability to play anywhere on the fretboard and being able to play passages of music/ or scales at rapid speeds, cleanly and in tune. Transcription: All student must be able to transcribe their favorite bass player, or favorite bass lines or solo. Any piece of music can work, a horn line, a melody line etc Time: All bass players should have a strong solid, internal pulse. This is the foundation in which all bass players get most of their work from. The most important thing is that the student learns to use their ear, to learn the music he/she loves the most. Time: all bass players/students must have strong rhythms. IF a bassist does not have a strong sense of rhythm, the ensemble will not work well, and the bassist will have a difficult time being able to play comfortably with a drummer. However if a student is a beginner, I will start him/her off comfortably playing the instrument. Eventually I will introduce music theory and scales, sight-reading music constructing walking baselines etc etc. If a student is more advanced, I will enforce the 4 T's I talked about and make sure to incorporate what he/she wishes to work on or learn. I do create my own lesson plan based around these philosophy I am believe in as well.
LESSON STYLE
I make sure to know where the student is at in their playing ability. From then, I try to make sure that the student has as much fun as possible, while still staying on topic of the materials I teach them. I do my best to make sure the student is comfortably in what I have to teach them, I do not want to frustrate the student or make them learn music they are not interested in. I am very friendly in understanding when a student is having difficulty learning a certain passage of music or scale pattern.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
