I enjoy playing music with other people, so I would love to share this joyful experience with my students. In 2007, I came to the States for pursuing the Masters degree in Boston and Doctoral degree in Madison. I have had lots of performance opportunity and community engagements. After the engagement with Civic Orchestra of Chicago, I am now excited to bring the joy of playing music to more people. Read More

Every student is unique in their ability level, dedication to the instrument/craft, et. al; therefore, I cannot expect that every student will be the next Larry Combs. I do, however, expect that every student take their responsibility for practicing each week, coming prepared to lessons, and being a good student. In lessons, I am kind and personable as anyone should be, but I like to make clear my expectations right from the beginning. Read More

My teaching follows the books quite a bit, so that the student remembers what was taught when they go home and practice. I like for the student to have a notebook that I can write in supplemental information. I understand that each student learns differently and I am able to differentiate my teaching methods to best fit the student needs. I enjoy getting to know each student's personality, strengths and challenges so that we can work together to make a fun and enjoyable time if learning and progressing in music. Read More

I encourage students to set their own goal, no matter the age. For youth, I desire the parents to be involved and provide encouragement in between lessons to ensure that students get the best result. I use positive reinforcement with my students as I have with my own children. I find that rewarding student with praise for accomplishing their goals helps them grow their confidence and self-esteem within their skill set. Read More

While a consistent practice schedule is ideal but the same principle applies here: focused practice is ideal, practicing just to get in the hours will not progress a students ability (I know from personal experience). Some students enjoy learning exercises from a book while others enjoy learning pop songs by ear, forcing book exercises on a student who may want to learn Ariana Grande songs will result in inefficient practice. Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My own father handed me a guitar when I was 8 years old and taught me my first chords -- this set me up for a lifetime of passionate musicianship and music study. I appreciated the fact that my father never pushed me, but only taught me what I wanted and needed to learn at the time. I have taken this principle with me into my own instruction style, where I guide the student based on their own personal interests and passions, never trying to force anything that they don't honestly care about.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the hundreds of compositions I've written, many of which haven't been recorded, many of which have -- when listening to them, I realize how important my childhood musical instruction was to my future as a player -- all of the chord voicings and musical styles I learned have come into play as I've traveled along this journey as a composer and performer. It makes me proud to know that I've shaped so many experiences with my abilities!

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I chose guitar as my primary instrument because it feels very intimate to me, the way I can hold it in my lap and in my arms, and I can feel it resonating on my tummy as the strings buzz while I play -- it's a very deep connection! Also, it's easy to travel with, I can usually take a guitar anywhere, which is great because I never know when there's going to be an opportunity for me to play!

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child shows any interest in music, a particular musical instrument, or explicitly states that they want to learn, it is time for them to start! It's easy for a child to pick up an instrument, as their brains are still in a period of extraordinary expansion and development -- learning an instrument will help them not only become musicians, but will also teach them the essential virtues of patience, practice, and commitment, setting them up for a more successful adulthood!

When will I start to see results?
Results depend on how often a student practices -- if they don't practice, you may never see results. However, if they practice for at least a half an hour every day, results can start to be seen within a week or two! This development can be extremely exciting for a new student and their loved ones, as the fruit of their labor will show in amazing and inspiring ways, which will make them want to continue to learn and grow!

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
To practice effectively, I believe musicians must set a daily practice schedule, whether it is 30 minutes or 4 hours -- this daily commitment will greatly improve results, growth and fluency on our instrument. I also believe practice must involve rudiments (practicing chord structures, scales, etc.), but also must be balanced a period of "freestyle" playing, where we allow our imaginations to guide us freely; this deepens our intimacy with the instrument and develops our own personal style!
