His musical journey began with many years of piano studies. At 15, he discovered the drums and quickly developed the passion that led him to enroll in the Jazz and Popular Music program at College Lionel Groulx (renowned college). Matt also studied the slide trombone for five years while playing in the military. My methods vary according to the student's level and experience. I provide a clear lesson plan complete with goals, achievement levels, and performances. * For kids: All the kids feel like rock stars because I make sure each lesson is both fun and enriching. When teaching kids I use a song based teaching system so they are learning songs they love while they get the academic benefits of music. * For teenagers and adults aiming for professionalism: I push my students to develop sophisticated hand and foot techniques, working rudiments on the pad and applied to the kit. I am a very dynamic teacher. I like to commit to my students, motivate them to find their own music. One of my goals is to spread the idea that music is inside the person and not in the instrument. It is important find the inner music through ear training, rhtyhmic exercises and improvisation games, so student can develop musical skills that will lead them to enjoy the practice and grow as a performers. In my lessons I use snare drum method books such as Mitchell Peters Intermediate Book or Stick Control by George Stone to teach reading and basic hand technique. Once I feel the student is proficient in reading and technique I move on to drumset coordination books as well as learning drum parts to the students favorite music. I also teach techniques for xylophone, tympani and other classical percussion instruments. I have an extensive library of music books and techniques so if one method doesn't work I have no problem customizing my lesson plan to fit the student's need. Read More

For beginning students, I start with the Drummers Complete Vocabulary, which establishes good technique. Simultaneously, based on the students interests, I pick two styles that the student would like to begin working on. Once they've learnt a specific rudiment, I show them how to use that in everyday performance and get creative with it by applying that in beats, fills etc. If the student has a specific song or style that they want to learn, I help them break it down into simple parts so that they can understand and perfect it really easily. As the musical director for my college A Cappella group, there was an element of vocal teaching for new and existing members. We learned new song arrangements as a group, rather than assigning parts and having singers learn at home. Conversely, they taught me! It was a great collaboration. Most recently, I have taught private and large group lessons for elementary grade students (TK-5th) in the areas of ukulele, drum set, bucket drumming, hand drumming, and rock band. Read More

Regarding the actual playing, I emphasize playing slow and steady while keeping the flow of the music, even when it may be tempting to play an easier phrase faster while stopping to play a harder one. I find that progress is fastest playing with that patience in mind, getting a great feel for the music. Also, it's essential to come up with a unique practice plan for the student, accommodating their weekly schedule to find a consistent amount of practice time at their own pace. Read More
