I started teaching in 2018, soon after moving to LA a few weeks after I graduated from Berklee College Of Music. I started out teaching at music schools, and would often have up to 30 students in a week. I would have weekly lessons with my students, prepare them for their annual recitals, and communicate with parents after their child's progress. For beginning students, I start with the Drummers Complete Vocabulary, which establishes good technique. Simultaneously, based on the students interests, I pick two styles that the student would like to begin working on. Once they've learnt a specific rudiment, I show them how to use that in everyday performance and get creative with it by applying that in beats, fills etc. If the student has a specific song or style that they want to learn, I help them break it down into simple parts so that they can understand and perfect it really easily. Nothing is more rewarding than sharing my passion for music with my students. I love to watch them grow and I am always conscious of setting realistic goals for each student every lesson. I make sure the homework is clear and attainable by the student. I want each student to feel good about their progress and to fuel their passions for drums. I teach from a feel and improvisation stand point. I do start with basic rhythm studies but I love to allow for my students to explore the kit and their own comfort levels. It creates what I feel to be a sense of intimacy between them and the instrument. I started percussion instruction in elementary school at age 9, proceeding through high schools playing in the concert, symphonic, jazz, and marching bands.
