Ive been also teaching piano for 8 years privately and at music academies to students from young children to adults at beginning to advanced levels. Working with different individuals always expands my way of teaching and my perspectives on how to share and teach. It's an ever-lasting renewing game. Ive been learning a lot from my students by exchanging my perspectives musically and practically with them who all hold different perspectives and different passions and goals, and I am grateful for that. Of course, every student is different, and an integral part of my philosophy involves getting to know each student so that I may learn their creative preferences, strengths, and weaknessness. I do not shy away from books, I do indeed enjoy working out of the Hal Leonard collection because I appreciate the step by step structure. This may apply less to guitar, however, if the student's primary ambitions are to learn songs by Green Day or The Beatles, etc. Read More

I am always continuing to expand my potential as a musician and as a human being. I feel that self-knowledge equates largely to the quality and meaning of music when expressed. Technical abilities are very important of course as they set the limitations of self-expression, though many seem to overlook the deeper purposes and benefits of music. I myself love my craft. From music I gain an intellectual rise through analysis, a creative outlet through improvising and composing, and a great understanding of how my body functions most effectively. Read More

I have been a full time teacher for 5 years. I work with ages as young as 3 and as old as mid 60's. I enjoy the variety in ages as I believe my approach to teaching is one of building a strong musical foundation and I am skilled and flexible to teach these concepts to all ages. I am a singer first and a pianist second. Piano was my first instrument, and then I later went on to study voice at New England Conservatory of Music. Read More

I strive to cultivate in all my students a lasting love for the art of music in whatever form it manifests in them. Finding what about the instrument is inspiring to the student is paramount to keeping both of us engaged in the process. As a teacher I challenge my students to explore the joy of making music with their instrument and to chase that which cultivates joy in their playing. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 24years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 11years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

My style is to create a stress-free environment. Making music is fun and fulfilling and I make sure the student gets to experience that for themselves. I am very flexible with my approach. If I notice a student hates to read music, then we will practice learning by ear, or vice versa. If I notice my student is writing his or her own songs, then I foster that by teaching composition. Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
I have a very musical family on my dad's side! My grandpa played ragtime piano by ear on my mom's side, my grandpa played jazz trumpet on my dad's side, my aunt on my dad's side plays classical piano, both my uncles teach music on my dad's side, and my cousin and her fiance play a variety of instruments on my dad's side. I still question if music is genetic, but this gives me some hope and insight into whether it is or not!

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I have played a variety of different styles, ranging from country to jazz fusion, to classical, to swing, to rock, but I will always love playing jazz music the most. I have spent most of my time listening to, practicing, composing, arranging, and just absorbing jazz music. I have been eating, sleeping, and breathing it for a long time. However, if I had to say my true favorite, would be playing the synthesizer in the genre of jazz fusion, as I get to play a lot of notes very fast, and I get to 'shred' a lot of the time in this style. It is also the most fun to play for me :)

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I have played piano all of my life, and I really started to take jazz piano seriously when I was about 11. However, when I have also been singing since I was very young as well, and I got very involved in the musicals in middle school, where I discovered I also had a knack for vocals. From there, I joined my high school's vocal jazz ensemble in my senior year of high school when my opportunities for musicals dwindled, and I continued it through college and I have been pursuing group and solo vocal jazz ever since! It is also very useful to be able to play and sing at the same time as well, and it is a very useful skill that I hope to share with my students!

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
Practice sessions come in all shapes and sizes, and can all depend on what you need to work on. I have had practice sessions range from 20 minutes all the way to 5 hours, because some things take longer to own than others. For example, 2 bars of music can take me 5-10 minutes to practice, or they can take an hour! It all depends on the piece, the difficulty, and even sometimes how I'm feeling that day! Practicing can be a difficult art form, but it's all about falling in love with the process and finding as many ways as possible to enjoy it! I can't lie and say it's always fun, but when I master something, it makes all that time in the shed more worth it than anything else!

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am most proud of winning 3 solo awards and being part of 2 group awards for the Downbeat Student Music Awards. These awards recognize the top jazz musicians in the country ranging from high school to graduate levels of music, and the win a soloist category twice, and being recognized as an outstanding performer prior in the same category is a humbling and profound honor. Nothing makes me more proud to be able to share my music, and to be recognized for it at this capacity is life-changing!
