For beginning students, I use the Hal Leonard Basic or Kids Guitar Method because it is such a good introduction to the instrument. For bass and ukulele I also use the beginner Hal Leonard Method books. For more advanced students, I first get a sense for what they want to learn and where they want to go, by asking them some questions about their previous education, what songs they like to listen to, and any problems with practicing or grasping the material, that they may have experienced. Then, I create a custom lesson plan catered to their goals, based on my experience, and various methods gained from Berklee College of Music curricula.

I have a deep and passionate love for all things music, whether it's teaching, performing, writing, or listening, and I love being able to share that with my students. I did my undergrad program at UMass Lowell and have achieved my Bachelors degree in Music Studies. I currently still attend the University, where I am striving to get my Masters degree in Music Teaching. Outside of school I enjoy writing and recording my own music, and I occasionally play live shows when I can. I'm versatile when it comes to the number of instruments that I can play. This includes Guitar, Cello, Piano, Bass, and Drums, but the instruments I've had the most experience with are Guitar and Cello.

I began teaching guitar when I was 17 in my hometown. I am a drummer, but can say I have limited experience teaching drums.  In the last few years I've taught a drumming appreciation class as well as a gardening 101 class, both for ages 4-11 as part of Austins Camp Indigo.  I've also led nature walks and outdoor games for children for Camp champions in Marble Falls, TX. In late 2015 I began work as an assistant aftercare teacher at an elementary school in Belmont, MA. I have ambition to teach guitar there as well.

Of course, every student is different, and an integral part of my philosophy involves getting to know each student so that I may learn their creative preferences, strengths, and weaknessness. I do not shy away from books, I do indeed enjoy working out of the Hal Leonard collection because I appreciate the step by step structure. This may apply less to guitar, however, if the student's primary ambitions are to learn songs by Green Day or The Beatles, etc. Jazz music has its own rather extensive work load, which differers greatly from classical and rock, but I hope very much to put my qualification in this realm to good use very soon. Typically, I like to break the lesson up with a healthy balance of techique (scales, chords, etc), interpretation (etudes, pieces), and creativity (free play, improvisation, composition, etc.)

I taught my first private lesson during my first year at Berklee. I immediately knew it was something I wanted to keep doing from that point forward. Alas, private teaching was not enough teaching to satiate me, so I quickly found a summer job that would enable me to get as many hours teaching as possible. That job was teaching full length courses in Rock Performance, Composition, and Songwriting classes for a summer program located on Yale's campus. After one summer there, I knew I would have to return for many more. Every summer I am astonished by how much fun students can have in just 3 weeks while they are working and improving their playing. The real skill I try to teach all my students is how to enjoy practicing. If a student can learn that, they will have a way to enjoy themselves for the rest of their life.
