What I like to do in my studio is, set realistic goals for the student. I use "challenges" to help students achieve their goals. And reward them when they achieve them. I like using a lot of games as well to make piano learning fun. So I teach a lot of theory aspects using games with timers, and flash cards, dry erase dices and prizes when goals are meant. Some of my student favorites are the 30 piece challenge, Karate Scale challenge, speedy finger challenge and much more. Read More

Hi! My name is Katya. I was born and raised in Soviet Union, where I studied piano since I was 5 years old. I got a classical piano education in Soviet Union, graduating with honors from a music school, later graduating from a Music College, and further advancing my education by taking private lessons in Cape Town, South Africa from a well-known London-based pianist Graham Fitch and recently taking private lessons from Raisa Isaac – Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory Pianist. I am a motivated instructor who enjoys teaching students of all ages. My experience includes playing from memory works by well known classical composers such as Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin and Debussy. These recitals were before I graduated. My teachers were impressed that I could play these works from memory. I enjoyed practicing for these recitals. Playing the piano was never considered a job for me because I enjoyed it so much. Ive been told I am a very encouraging teacher. My goal is to teach the student something new in every class. Lessons can focus on technique, performance, sight reading / singing, ear training, music history, music theory, composition, improvisation, fakebooks and more. Piano lessons can cover everything from how to sit at the piano to using rotational movements to get accuracy in large leaps. I focus on musicality. A student does have to be Lang Lang to sound beautiful. Read More

I have been teaching professionally for over 30 years now. As an intern in Cuba's conservatoires and privately as guitar teacher. Later in Jamaica at the Cultural arts center in Montego Bay where I became familiar with the system used by the associated board of the royal schools of music ABRSM, based in the UK but for sure the most used system in the world by a majority of countries around the world. I'm always looking for new methods of teaching in order to encourage a rapid and continued development of music skills. My goal is to make the students to play their first song right from the first lesson. First I teach them how to play the instrument and then the music theory. Yes you read well, first the kids start playing, and once they are happy and encourage you introduce the theory and technic studies. Read More

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My favorite genre of music is classical. I think its so complex and beautiful. There's so much going on in Classical music that every time you listen to a piece you can hear something new.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I started with Piano, then Violin, Viola, Guitar.
I would love to keep learning more instruments!
I began with piano since my parents already had one. I picked violin since my friend started taking lessons. Then Viola since my violin teacher played both and she inspired me so much. Guitar because I wanted to learn something new.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
Bachelors in Music and Masters in Music Business. I chose music business after doing an internship at my school where I helped organize the choir tour to Cuba. I thought it was so much fun and would love for that to be my job.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Music definitely runs in my family. My great great grandfather was the music teacher of the King of Egypt. And after escaping to Israel he opened up one of the first music schools in Israel.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I use a mix of Suzuki and the O'Connor method for strings. This gives the student a background in both classical and folk music.
For Piano I recommend the Bastien method.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I started with piano lessons because my parents already had a piano. After that I wanted to learn violin because my friend was learning violin. Then I chose to start Viola (my now primary instrument) because my violin teacher played both and I was inspired to be like her.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Finding a teacher that inspires and motivates your child to practice and love music is very important. I did not like my first teacher, but continued taking lessons. Luckily my next teacher was amazing. And I began loving to practice and starting learning things on my own. When I moved on to college to study music, I did not connect with my professor there, and almost dropped out and changed major. I lost all the love I had for music taking lessons with that professor. Luckily a friend of mine insisted I come for a lesson with her professor at a different school. I ended up transferring schools and got a Bachelors and Masters degree in Music studying with my new professor.
When will I start to see results?
This all depends on how much you are practicing. The more work you put in the sooner you see the results. Stay patient, sometimes you may not see the results just yet but your brain and fingers are making the connection and the results will follow soon.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Look at the music and tackle the more challenging sections first. After you can play them well, up the tempo until you have it where it needs to be, then put it together with the next sections.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If they show interest in the instrument and can focus and stay engaged for 30 minutes. generally around 5 years old is a good age to start your child in music lessons.
When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
My violin and viola teacher in high school inspired me so much. Before I took lessons with her I didn't see myself becoming a musician. after 2 years with her. I knew thats all I wanted to do.
