As I previously mentioned, I try my best to keep lessons as fun and engaging as possible, because I feel that creative enjoyment is a very important motivator in this field. That being said, I do encourage and appreciate a consistent practice schedule so that my students may advance at an appropriate pace. I also believe that acknowledging when a student has succeeded and lauding them appropriately for their hard work is a very valuable facet in creating intrinsic motivation. Read More

My philosophy is if it isn't fun; nobody wants to do it. My method of teaching provides simple psycology in making praticing fun. The piano needs to be praticed every day if the student wants to progress! For Children I teach pop and classical piano, where as adults I try to find out why they want to play and what style of music they would like to play. Instead of using existing method books which may or may not contain music that the student can relate to, I like to use the favorite songs of the student. Once the student makes known his/her request I then create an arrangement of that particular song and tailor it to suit their level ( beginner ,intermediate, advanced ). This ensures a high level of interest and motivation on the students part. For those students who insist on using method books I'm OK with that too ( So the traditionalists are welcome too). My emphasis is on performance and motivating the student. I set goals for performance at the early stages of study whether it's for family and friends or at an open mic or in church. Without performance as a goal it's hard to motivate the student to practice. I analyze each student's individual learning style whether it's visual or auditory and find ways to help them learn faster and securely. Developing correct technique and hand positions are critical to properly perform music. Read More

I talk to them about my experience with music, how i became aware at their age how music made me feel and how it made other people feel: happy, sad, excited, feel like dancing etcetera. I ask if they know what I mean. I talk in a low voice unless I get excited about an accomplishment. I try things to make them laugh. I brag about kids to their parents. i encourage them to practice without scolding, I like to say Ive been doing this a long time and I know when my students aren't practicing. Read More
