Overview:
Minnie is a teacher, singer/songwriter born and raised in Puerto Rico.  She has a BS in Arts in Music with a minor in Voice and Piano.  Twenty of her 44 years of a career in the Music Business, has been as a Music, Voice, Piano and Guitar teacher with many accolades.   Minnie got the 1st Place in the Billboard Magazine  songwrting contest in 1989, 1990 and 1991 consequently.  Also, she was the recipient of  the Hispanic Achievement Award in 1992 as The Soloist of the Year; The best of Philly Magazine in 1989 and 1992 and the pioneer of the latin jazz in Puerto Rico in the eighties.  At the present time, she tours with her Sophisticated Fiesta Band and teacher voice, piano and guitar in her private studio, in Orlando, Fl where she lives.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching career started while I was performing in Philadelphia. There was a need for music teachers in the area, so I accepted an invitation to teach to children of El Taller Puertorriqueño. What a satisfaction to see my students grow and understand the beauty of music! That was a motivation and still is today! Since then, the passion for teaching grew in me with my performing career. I moved to different states and every time I looked for venues to teach. Now, I am in Florida with the same enthusiasm and love for teaching.
METHODS USED
There are different publishers that I use. Depending on the age, personality, age and interests of the students. It can vary; either Bastien, John Thompson, Alfred Publishing, Hal Leonard or any other I find appropriate. In a beginners face I explain notation values, names, posture and what affects their learning. Depending on the age of the student I decide if the material is suitable for their capacity of learning. We do different level and If I see that the student is a fast learner I upgrade them to an adult book.
LESSON STYLE
I try to create a relaxed, fun, trustworthy and focused, environment for the student. I like to ask them what’s interesting and appealing to them, then we start the lesson. When I teach at my studio and children come directly from school I give them a snack if they haven’t had any. Children cannot concentrate if they are hungry. We play musical games for the younger ones, so they can internalize either the beats or the values of the notation. A fun and relax environment is very inviting to achieve their goals.
