Overview:
Hi! My name is Katya. I was born and raised in Soviet Union, where I studied piano since I was 5 years old. I got a classical piano education in Soviet Union, graduating with honors from a music school, later graduating from a Music College, and further advancing my education by taking private lessons in Cape Town, South Africa from a well-known London-based pianist Graham Fitch and recently taking private lessons from Raisa Isaac – Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory Pianist. I have passion for teaching, and extensive experience teaching music and languages. My teaching style is flexible, with adjustments for each individual student's needs and abilities. I can conduct lessons in English, Russian, and Spanish.
EXPERIENCE
My piano teaching experience starts in 1996, when I first started working in one of many music schools of former Soviet Union. Coming out of 14 years of (former) education in Classical Piano (Bachelor of Fine Arts in Piano Performance), I am always trying to improve, not only piano playing skills, but also on teaching skills. Constantly educating myself, and advancing as a teacher and a performer, I recently completed a Child Psychology course of study. I have been fortunate to live and teach internationally (Soviet Union, USA, Singapore, Australia, Central America), making me also multi-lingual, being able to teach in English, Russian or Spanish. From beginner to advanced level, and students of any age are welcome! I make strong emphasis on proper technique and hand positioning from the very beginning, as well as developing quality of sound and musicality. Dexterity exercises, scales and music theory are added into each lesson, to help students with understanding of music and proper unique. Moreover, my program is adjusted to each individual student. I am looking forward to answering any other questions you might have, and looking forward to teaching you!
METHODS USED
What makes me stand out from other piano instructors is that I use the Russian Piano-Schooling System approach. Playing piano is much more than just the action of fingers and hands. Teaching of the artistic image and musical intonation, not just mechanical repetition -- is what makes the Russian method so special and unique. My students are encouraged to deeply listen to the quality of the sound they produce, and to identify what needs to be done to improve it. Every student is different, therefore, teacher's approach needs to be adjusted for each individual student. Besides extensive experience in Piano teaching, I also recently got a Diploma of Professional Child Psychology, which helps me deeper understand my little students.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is based on traditional classical approach of Russian Piano teaching method. For younger, beginner level student lessons are structured around different activities and games (for very young students) to learn notes reading and rhythm. For intermediate and more advanced students each lesson starts with a warm up, of scales, arpeggios, etudes or other technical pieces. After that we move onto working on individual pieces of music. Student is explained what needs to be done to achieve desired results for each specific piece, and the homework is written in a notebook for the following lesson. Typically there will be 4 to 5 pieces of music, recommended by the teacher and selected by the student, on which we would work for a couple of months, leading to performance/recital. Steady building of the repertoire, and encouragement of public performances are all parts of a young pianist education. I hold recitals (at this time - video concert sand recitals) with my students at 2 to 4 times a year.

3 of our 4 kids have online classes (at home previously) with Katya and we are all delighted with her. Katya is a great teacher, the kids love her. She has the perfect balance between structure and patience, she is funny and demanding at the same time. The kids learn a lot with a great and adapted selection of partitions. She pushes them the right way, they feel supported and recognized in their efforts and achievements.

I didn't think you could teach music online, but no choiseI'm pleasantly surprised by the progress my son made on the piano. He progressed in the songs he plays but also in the way he plays them, Katya manages to make him feel the music even online.
