I also make it a goal for the student to learn one major classical piece throughout the course of instruction: "Fur Elise" by Beethoven, or "Moonlight Sonata: 1st Movement" by Beethoven. Although I am a classically trained soprano, I have experience both singing and teaching Musical Theatre and contemporary styles of singing. I like to know what activities other than music they enjoy, what their favorite/least favorite subject is in school, what they want to be when they grow up, what motivates them and what doesn't. Most of my training is in music composition and theory; I graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a Master's of Music degree in Composition, and from the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Theory. I regard composition as my primary musical skill. I find that their methods for both kids and adults not only covers the basic fundamentals of music, but they are also able to make everything comprehensive and enjoyable. For guitar, I like to use Hal Leonard's basic guitar book for students focusing on popular music and basic guitar, and for classical guitar I like to use the Christopher Parkening Method. Read More
