I believe everyone, even teachers are students forever and we are all equal in this journey. I learn just as much, if not more from my students. I find the most progress in students are when they speak out and meet me halfway in the lesson. I am more than happy to adjust my methods as a teacher because no student is the same. I currently work with people with disabilities in music around the greater Boston area, but want to expand all around in the beautiful state of Rhode Island! Read More

I work to custom-tailor my lessons for each individual student based on their skill level and musical tastes (my main areas of focus for guitar are in the pop/rock/folk/indie genres ranging back to the 60s up to current music and classical/pop/electronic for piano/keys). I believe the best way to learn music is to play music that excites you. I teach everything from technique to theory using the students favorite songs and adjusting them as needed. Read More

It's important to me that students are invested in their own lessons, and what this means will differ from student to student. For some five year olds, that may be simply participating in the whole lesson and practicing a few minutes per week. For others, it may mean being challenged with advanced materials. Each student will receive a unique repertoire and lesson based on ability and interests. I focus on technique, then repertoire, then theory, then review for a 30 minute lesson, and younger students will often get a fun music-based game at the end if the lesson has been fruitful. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop passion and love for music. Therefore, it is important to let the students progress at their own paces with supervision and slight push. I encourage this by not only setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson and making sure we achieve that, but also by adding, from time to time, interesting notes about the history of music or composer's biography to captivate the students' imagination. I am a passionate and inspired music instructor in trombone, music theory, composition, arranging and beginner level piano technique. I graduated with my Master's Degree in Jazz Performance at Berklee's Global Jazz Institute I believe that music is a manifestation of the complexities of the human condition and can act as a conduit of change and inspiration. Communication through music enables expression, provides comfort, enlightenment, hope and optimism. Our role as educators is to provide the venue for learning and create an atmosphere of all-inclusive inspirational thought provocation. Read More

I'm a kind and nurturing teacher who has been playing the piano for thirty years. I work with students of all ages and ability levels, including students who are neurodivergent, students with physical disabilities, and students who don't speak English. Music is a universal language that everybody can understand if they have a really great teacher. My favorite teaching moments are when the lightbulb turns on and my student has their "aha!" understanding of a new concept. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
It takes a lot of focus and discipline. I would make sure that practice time is set aside and written into a schedule. Don’t spend too much time focusing on things you aren’t succeeding at but go back to a simpler form that you have already mastered and build on that area. For example, if you are having trouble with a C Major scale in piano, you can go back to a five finger pattern by breaking the scale down into those first five notes (C, D, E, F & G). Once you have mastered this, you can add on A, B, & C.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I had quite a few teachers who inspired me to do music. My mother, first of all, took me a church choir rehearsal at age four or five, and it was love at first sound! My grandfather listened to big band music & songs that sounded like Frank Sinatra. And he was always listening to tapes and records as far back as I can remember. My earliest music teacher was back in kindergarten. Having a music class at that age was so influential for me. My introduction to instruments was in fifth grade when I started taking clarinet lessons. This was when I really started to pick up on music notation/reading music. And although, I've been singing my whole life, I didn't quite learn how to properly sing until my freshman year of high school. I worked incredibly hard for three years so that I could eventually join the elite chorale, which I made my senior year. I would have to say my high school choir director had the biggest influence on me in terms of really studying and pursuing music.

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
My music degree is in vocal performance with an additional focus on piano. I chose vocal performance because I have always been singing and this is the instrument that has always come the most naturally for me. I love singing and it just made sense. After a couple of years I chose to add piano lessons because this was another instrument I seemed to pick up quickly and enjoyed playing. I had a goal to be able to sing and accompany myself on piano simultaneously and I was able to reach that goal in time to perform a piece at my recital.
