I once was a student and I understand how important it was to find a teacher that can teach what I lacked the most. This is exactly why I do my lessons to be costumed to each and every students! I try to inspire students with what they can accomplish and what they needs to be challenged. Understanding concepts and how to target a goal is very very important. Instruments: Piano Voice Music
I emphasize on solid foundation. I teach my piano students with classical techniques and music theory while they are learning piano, so they are building up both knowledges at the same time. I also emphasize on how to use their fingers properly with 3 basic rules. If students can master them, they can apply to any music they want to play in different styles. Piano lesson is teamwork between me, student, and parents. Read More

My lessons with young beginners tend do be focus on very specific skills. For instance, a 7 year old book 1 student learning "Go Tell Aunt Rhody" will do exercises focusing on bow holds, violin posture, tone production, bow distribution, and articulation. She will sing each phrase of the song, and clap the rhythm of each phrase of the song. Overall, it is this incredibly detailed approach that facilitates excellence as she moves forward. Read More

Instruments: Piano Trumpet Trombone
I have been teaching trumpet lessons for a decade, to students of all ages, and I also now teach beginning piano and trombone. I have also served as a Teaching Assistant in the Harvard Music Department. While I originally come from classical training and have the ability to deal with classical repertoire, I think there is much to be gained from trying to find and learn about the music that students love and connect to, be it Chopin, the Beatles, movie soundtracks, or Sara Bareilles. What does a normal practice session look like for you?
A normal practice session for me is no different than what I expect from my students. For wind instruments I start out with some long tones, scales, arpeggios for ten minutes. Classical studies fro ten minutes. And improvisation for ten minutes. Then I take a ten minute break and go back over things I think I missed in scales, arpeggios I will go slowly go through things that I think need work. If I see that I have a problem playing something I will find supplementary material to gain more technique.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have an undergraduate degree in music education. It was my intention at that time to pursue a career in teaching. Aside from the stability of a teaching routine I get great satisfaction out of helping others. What I found, out along the way, is that students have taught me a lot of things and their successes have lead to me greatly modifying and enhancing my instructional materials and techniques. Also teaching different instruments has enhanced my overall abilities as a musician and an instructor.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
My most immediate goal is to play in a symphony orchestra. That is really my dream job. I am working on learning all the literature that I need to know in order to play at that level. I also may need additional instruments for a position like that. For example clarinet players may need an Eb clarinet or a bass clarinet in addition to a Bb and an A. I am looking at these opportunities and working on the music every day. The fact that I striving for this level of excellence will hopefully give my students some idea of how they need to approach their own goals.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I tried sales for a few years. It really wasn't for me. I worked as a public school teacher and I wasn't thrilled with that either. What I am doing now is good. I like private teaching and eventually I would like to play more classical music in either a symphony orchestra or in a ballet or opera company. I am also focused on being a soloist in the classical genre. The focal point of my practice is classical music and jazz studies. Commercial music does not interest me as much. I do not like to play in bars or clubs. Those places have too scary creatures.
