I began teaching woodwinds when I was 18 while attending Northern Illinois University. I would help junior high and high school students in the area in private lessons. At age 23 I began teaching music courses at Istanbul Bilgi University, in Turkey. After leaving Turkey in 2001, I have focused on private lessons, teaching students of all ages and ability levels. I have been fortunate enough to perform with many incredible world-class musicians such as Quincy Jones, Phil Collins, Tito Puente, Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, Toots Thielemans, Paquito DRivera and Gerald Albright. Through my collaborations, I'm able to connect with other artists's forms of expression. While teaching, I strive to inspire my students to appreciate how amazing music is for understanding life and for relating with others. Lastly, music has given me a way to be involved in other artistic mediums. My projects have included writing music for a play at the Province Town Tennessee Williams Theatre Festival, writing music for dance in the Rubin museum in NY, and writing music for an award winning Argentinian documentary. As a teacher I like to be very encouraging, gentle, and supportive. I make sure to encourage with positive reinforcement. When a child gets something right, I praise the accomplishment. If they fall short, I compliment them on something that well, and then add something along the lines of, "That was amazing, let's do that same thing only this time ______". I also encourage any students, young and old, to do some searching for material on their own to practice learning new skills. Read More

For beginning students I typically start them off with a very simple method of repetition and mirror working first with one hand on the instrument then progressing to fret work. The fundamentals may seem tedious but they are necessary to reach a basic playing level in a short amount of time. I like to use both classical and modern music to interest all of my students and introduce them to new musical genres. Read More

I will always listen to what students want to learn and play but at the same time will introduce them to music they aren’t familiar with. To be a great musician you have to be well rounded in different styles of music. I will also encourage students to express their emotions through what they play because I believe music can be very therapeutic and sometimes people have a hard to expressing themselves through talking. What is your dream piece to perform and why?
My dream piece to perform would probably any song that I have written. I don't feel the need to learn other people's music because I don't see where that will get me in life. My students can learn any piece they want to learn if they feel that they will become a better musician that way. I will definitely teach my students how to write their own music if they want. I have heard so many songs in this world that I think people will get tired of them eventually. That is why I choose to write songs and not learn other people's songs.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I don't think I would be doing anything instead. The problem with me is that I have some disorders that keep me from having a normal job. I believe there is something wrong with the Basal Ganglia part of my brain. There mustn't be enough metabolism, oxygen, and blood flow going to that part of my brain. I am getting tested soon by neuropsychologists to see what exactly is wrong with me. I think I have Basal Ganglia Disorder. The symptoms for this disorder are exactly what I have wrong with me. These symptoms are: ADHD, poor memory, loosing the thread of a conversation, and tics from head to toe, internally and externally.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I don't know if I have a favorite style or genre of music to play. I guess style wise, I like to play a lot of notes and play fast. I could also play slow and consistent as well. I like to be creative and have a nice artistic input when it comes to creating songs or helping others write songs and parts. I do like playing some sort of rock music the most. For piano, I like playing any genre. For drums, I like playing loud stuff, but I could also pull out a pair of brushes and play some soft jazz music that I am creating for my jazz album.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I started out on guitar. My uncle taught me a few chords. A few weeks later, I started teaching him. That is when we realized that I had a musical gift. I have something called perfect pitch, which one out of ten thousand people get. I used that perfect pitch to help teach me other instruments. Piano was my next instrument. Every year after that I would get an instrument that my dad would buy me. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be able to teach myself how to play so many instruments. I taught myself many instruments and after about 23 instruments, that's when I stopped counting and just started telling people that I can play any instrument. I can probably play at least 10 instruments proficiently and play along to any song or genre with those instruments. If I had more time in this world, I would be able to perfect my skills on every instrument.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My mom sings in the shower and my dad plays drums on his stomach. However, my uncle is a hippy and stuck in the 1960's. I learned a few chords on guitar from him and a few weeks later, I started teaching him guitar as if I played it for many years. My brother also plays a lot of instruments but sadly, he doesn't have perfect pitch like me. I wish he had it too so that he could tune his own guitar at practice quickly instead of having me do it, even though I enjoy tuning other people's instruments.
When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
As soon as I played my first instrument at the age of six years old, I knew right then and there that I would play music as a profession for the rest of my life. I always wanted to be famous and use my skills to help other people. Playing music at benefits to help raise money for organizations is a great way to help save the lives of many people all over the world. I want other people to learn how to play music so that they can use it as their profession and help other people around the world with their musical skills.
