Hello! My name is Austin and I'm a violinist and violist here in the Long Island, NY area. I recently graduated from The State University of New York at Fredonia with my degree in Viola Performance. My musical career has mostly been focused on playing orchestral and chamber music. I have played in orchestras featuring soloists, Grammy Winning cellist Zuill Bailey and violinist Rachael Lee. My teachers include Principal Violist of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Dr. Read More

For beginning piano students who are children, I usually start with John Thompson's "Teaching Little Fingers To Play."  Once the student has progressed and becomes more familiar with reading the notes in both clefs, I will begin to introduce solo pieces of music that the child picks out of the choices I present to them.  I do this to help encourage and reward the child with their success.  For adult piano students, I find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly. For my methods, I use a variety of books and create a diet of exercises and pieces that will build on fundamentals - from open strings, to scales and etudes like Schradieck, Kreutzer to pieces from the Suzuki Method as well as other options such as Nardini Concerto in b minor or Haydn Concerto in G Major. The method I use is scaffolding from the very small building blocks of technique and lead up to a mastery of each piece assigned. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with a basic book like Fiddle Magic by Sally O'Reilly. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, I will move on to the Suzuki Books. Along with teaching from the Suzuki Book, I will supplement their learning with an etude book such as Wohlfahrt and Kreutzer. After a certain point, I will start working on pieces and concertos not in the Suzuki books anymore. Read More

Instruments: Piano Violin Cello Viola Electric Violin Fiddle

Although I can teach various genres of music, my musical personal favorite is classical, which had great influence on my style of playing. I love music because it has always been my passion and driving force in my life. I teach music because it's not only an essential subject in academics, but also provides students with a creative outlet to express themselves and create meaningful connections with others in an orchestral setting. My work with the DCYOP, an El-Sistema inspired program, involves teaching the basics of playing the violin, viola, cello and music theory, adjudicating students’ progress, leading sectionals and full rehearsals in various DC schools, some from the most underserved communities. Highlights are having all the different schools come together for a large performance at the Kennedy Center and the students performances with Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell and Esperanza Spalding. I’ve also facilitated many youth orchestra performances and summer camps as string teaching artist in DC and Maryland showcasing that I can motivate the students to a high quality performance regardless of the amount of time. I love giving students a space to not only learn and grow, but also to find their own creative voices and passions. It's important for each student to feel inspired and to take a more active role in their learning process, so I listen to each student individually to successfully plan lessons that will resonate with them but also push them to improve. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Building a routine of daily practice is essential, especially for young beginners as they set out on their journey with the violin. I encourage my students to start with a short amount of practice every day (think of it like brushing your teeth!) to build the habit and then increase the practice expectation over time as lesson materials increase in complexity. I also believe that practicing efficiently is the goal, instead of X number of hours a day; quality over quantity! With all of my students, I approach practicing as another technique, just like left-hand agility or bow hold. Knowing how to practice effectively will take you further on the instrument and lead to more satisfying results.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
With young beginners, consider how your child takes direction in a classroom setting. If they are able to follow basic instructions well, they are likely ready for violin lessons! The violin can be taught to very young children, but it depends on the maturity of the particular child and their ability to stay on-task. I ask for parental participation in lessons with all children under 10 years old; during the week, you are the 'at-home teacher', so it's important to be aware of what we discuss in lessons. I do not expect parents to be musicians already (but hey, it's great if you are!)- I take the time to explain concepts to the parent to empower them to help their child practice confidently during the week. I am also available between lessons for any questions that may arise.

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I am fortunate to have two Performance Degrees in Violin from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where I studied with Bettina Mussumeli (as well as chamber music with Mark Sokol). When I was young, the opportunity to learn the violin was given to me through my elementary school's strings program, and I fell in love with the violin. By the time I was 11 years old, I was already set on being a professional violinist, and told anyone that would listen! Connecting with an audience through music has always been a joy to me, and the intense standards for musicality and technique in a Performance Degree program highly appealed to me. While I was studying Violin Performance, I also had the opportunity to begin teaching, which expanded my love for the violin in a different way. I learn so much about my own violin playing from teaching my students, and my teaching has benefited greatly from the exceptional teachers that I studied with on my own violin journey. Now, I view my career as being equal parts performer and educator- both are things that I am highly passionate about.
