I began playing violin at the age of 12. Over the years, I developed my skills further by joining my local community orchestra and getting lessons from renowned instructor pedagogues. I received my Bachelor's degree in Music Education at the State University of New York at Fredonia in 2017, where I performed regularly with the Symphonic and Chamber Orchestra, and learned about how to teach students both individually and in a school setting. My teaching method combines aspects of the Suzuki method with my own creative exercises and improvisation. I believe that teaching students to invent melodies and rhythms from early in their musical training deepens their ability to hear and perform. I also believe that rhythmic exercises are not emphasized enough in classical instrumental training, and I incorporate such exercises into my own core curriculum. If a student is interested in improvisation, jazz, or pop music, I offer in-depth instruction to performing over chord changes, and other creative violin techniques like playing chords, chopping, and other percussive tools. My teaching experience dates back to my undergraduate days, as I began teaching private lessons part-time 7 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students all across the globe in the US, Singapore, and Taiwan. I have worked with beginner, intermediate, and advanced players and adjusted to their needs accordingly, as well as gained valuable knowledge on how to efficiently resolve the difficulties encountered by the students. My own experience with how my teacher taught me also inspired me to have acquired many problem-solving skills and I aspire to pass down those abilities to my students. Read More

For beginning or young students (under age 8), music-related games are incorporated into lessons to encourage positive growth, rather than thinking of playing an instrument as a "chore". Small assignments are expected to be completed weekly, so that the child feels a sense of accomplishment and progress. For older or more advanced students, lessons are structured by a regimen of scales, exercises, and classical pieces. If the student so chooses, classical pieces can be exchanged for pop or contemporary music. Read More

Most importantly, I believe every student is different and I always try to avoid a "one size fits all" approach to teaching. That said, I'm a big advocate of scales, etudes, and technical exercises, as well as exploring repertoire (solo, chamber music, and symphonic). I encourage students to listen to a wide variety of music, in addition to their work on the violin, sometimes with weekly listening assignments. Daily, systematic practice at home is required of all my students (especially younger ones) for clear progress to happen. Read More

Every student is different; therefore there is no one method or strategy that will work universally. I create tailored lesson plans for each student taking into account age, experience, personality and learning style. Lessons can include ear training, music history, harmony, sight reading and improvisation depending on the level and goal of the student. When working with young children, I typically use games and activities and follow Mimi Zweigs principle of violin teaching, which is based on natural physical motions nurtured in a non-judgmental environment. If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I am fortunate to have two Performance Degrees in Violin from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where I studied with Bettina Mussumeli (as well as chamber music with Mark Sokol). When I was young, the opportunity to learn the violin was given to me through my elementary school's strings program, and I fell in love with the violin. By the time I was 11 years old, I was already set on being a professional violinist, and told anyone that would listen! Connecting with an audience through music has always been a joy to me, and the intense standards for musicality and technique in a Performance Degree program highly appealed to me.
While I was studying Violin Performance, I also had the opportunity to begin teaching, which expanded my love for the violin in a different way. I learn so much about my own violin playing from teaching my students, and my teaching has benefited greatly from the exceptional teachers that I studied with on my own violin journey. Now, I view my career as being equal parts performer and educator- both are things that I am highly passionate about.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
With young beginners, consider how your child takes direction in a classroom setting. If they are able to follow basic instructions well, they are likely ready for violin lessons! The violin can be taught to very young children, but it depends on the maturity of the particular child and their ability to stay on-task.
I ask for parental participation in lessons with all children under 10 years old; during the week, you are the 'at-home teacher', so it's important to be aware of what we discuss in lessons. I do not expect parents to be musicians already (but hey, it's great if you are!)- I take the time to explain concepts to the parent to empower them to help their child practice confidently during the week. I am also available between lessons for any questions that may arise.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Building a routine of daily practice is essential, especially for young beginners as they set out on their journey with the violin. I encourage my students to start with a short amount of practice every day (think of it like brushing your teeth!) to build the habit and then increase the practice expectation over time as lesson materials increase in complexity.
I also believe that practicing efficiently is the goal, instead of X number of hours a day; quality over quantity! With all of my students, I approach practicing as another technique, just like left-hand agility or bow hold. Knowing how to practice effectively will take you further on the instrument and lead to more satisfying results.
