For Beginning students or kids from 3 years old, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and also some other theory to help them to read the notes on staff. Once Student slightly progressed, I will begin to start shop pieces with another finger technique etude, to building stronger and solid finger and also I would recommend some music repertories to listen to it, just for building music expression. For the Adult or Teenager, I would like to know what kind of music brings them here, and we can set that piece what they eventually want to play as a goal, and helping student build and practice the technique. I have been teaching privately since 1989, teaching piano and bass at 15 years old. Thirty years later I have become a multi-instrumentalist playing Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Electric Bass, Latin Baby Bass, guitar, piano, synthesizer, keyboard and voice. I have a vast knowledge of classical and modern works and am comfortable transcribing modern compositions for my students. I typically start the students off with open strings and rhythms and we learn the left hand separately so that the start is not overwhelming. With an intermediate to more advanced students we progress to scales (Jhnke, Galamian, Flesh etc...), etudes and exercises (Shradieck, Kayser, Mazas, Kreutzer, Wieniawski, Paganini etc...), as well as performing pieces (this often includes Bach and Mozart in every student's repertoire). I very much encourage all of my students to record themselves a few times a week, perform as much as possible (even for the family pet), play competitions and play with others! Read More

With Violin Students, I like to start with the Suzuki method, Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, as well as some basic 1 octave scales. The first book of Suzuki is taught mainly by ear, while in the background I am also teaching rhythm with the Essential Elements material. With production songwriting and guitar, I like to work on basic chord shapes, chord changes and basic music theory so the student can understand the concepts clearly. Read More

Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, I've been living in Manhattan for the last five years, where I studied at The Juilliard School with Itzhak Perlman, Li Lin, and Catherine Cho for my Bachelor's and Master's degrees. For the last two years I've been serving as Teaching Assistant to Itzhak Perlman and Li Lin at Juilliard. I've had the good fortune of performing internationally as soloist with orchestras around the world, including the National Orchestra of Belgium, the China Philharmonic Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Weimar (Germany), The Lithuanian National Orchestra, and the California Symphony. My teaching philosophy centers around the goal of my students developing control of their own learning by becoming independent thinkers, problem solving on their own, and understanding critical methods for effective practice and successful performance. I guide this process by asking questions, offering suggestions, and ultimately steering students towards an ownership of their choices. As a result, they are able to maximize their practice time during the week as they become better analysts of their own playing from both a global and detailed perspective. Read More

I always remember the words of great violin teacher Ivan Galamian, who used to say : everything that is natural, is nice, and, everything that’s not natural is not nice. Musical material, and, learning of musical instrument, both require time, so depending on development of each student, teacher needs to understand which portion of the information to provide for each and every student and provide that information in natural and easy understanding way, to be able to help the student to learn quickly and develop a passion for music. If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I am fortunate to have two Performance Degrees in Violin from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where I studied with Bettina Mussumeli (as well as chamber music with Mark Sokol). When I was young, the opportunity to learn the violin was given to me through my elementary school's strings program, and I fell in love with the violin. By the time I was 11 years old, I was already set on being a professional violinist, and told anyone that would listen! Connecting with an audience through music has always been a joy to me, and the intense standards for musicality and technique in a Performance Degree program highly appealed to me.
While I was studying Violin Performance, I also had the opportunity to begin teaching, which expanded my love for the violin in a different way. I learn so much about my own violin playing from teaching my students, and my teaching has benefited greatly from the exceptional teachers that I studied with on my own violin journey. Now, I view my career as being equal parts performer and educator- both are things that I am highly passionate about.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
With young beginners, consider how your child takes direction in a classroom setting. If they are able to follow basic instructions well, they are likely ready for violin lessons! The violin can be taught to very young children, but it depends on the maturity of the particular child and their ability to stay on-task.
I ask for parental participation in lessons with all children under 10 years old; during the week, you are the 'at-home teacher', so it's important to be aware of what we discuss in lessons. I do not expect parents to be musicians already (but hey, it's great if you are!)- I take the time to explain concepts to the parent to empower them to help their child practice confidently during the week. I am also available between lessons for any questions that may arise.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Building a routine of daily practice is essential, especially for young beginners as they set out on their journey with the violin. I encourage my students to start with a short amount of practice every day (think of it like brushing your teeth!) to build the habit and then increase the practice expectation over time as lesson materials increase in complexity.
I also believe that practicing efficiently is the goal, instead of X number of hours a day; quality over quantity! With all of my students, I approach practicing as another technique, just like left-hand agility or bow hold. Knowing how to practice effectively will take you further on the instrument and lead to more satisfying results.
