BM, Eastern Michigan University, Violin Performance
I have been teaching independently since 2004, with experience in classical, Celtic fiddle, bluegrass, rock and improvisation. In addition to private lessons, I have assisted with classes from elementary through high school level at various schools. I plan customized lessons and work with students individually to achieve goals. I like to form real relationships with my students and still stay in touch with students I have not taught for years! It is very rewarding to me to help students find their own voices in music, and I try to provide the tools they will need to be successful in whichever style/field of music they are drawn to. Music is a therapeutic tool and I like to emphasize this aspect when teaching as well. Are you interested in learning classical technique but also love other styles of music? Are you interested in learning violin to enhance or add music into your life? I am open to anything, just let me know your goals and I would love to work with you to achieve them. I approach each students' situation uniquely and love customizing lessons to your personal goals. I do emphasize proper technique and building a good foundation, so expect to work hard but also enjoy yourself!
I began teaching while still in high school and have maintained a small private studio consistently since. I encourage consistency with practicing and performing in multiple groups for experience. I have a Bachelor's of Music in Violin Performance from Eastern Michigan University, and have been studying violin and playing independently for twenty years. After working in a well known strings store for three years in college I have an extensive knowledge of different music literature and teaching methodology. I have worked with students ranging in age from toddler to adult, even including adult beginners- I am very patient and open to almost anything my students are interested in learning. I performed in a rock/alternative band for years so I have experience with improvisation and composition spanning multiple styles of music.
I create custom lesson plans for each student based on their level, interests and goals. Typically I start brand new beginners with the basics, learning the parts of the instruments and the notes. Being a very visual learner myself, I enjoy using method books such as the Sassmannshaus series, as they are beautifully illustrated and help to capture and hold young children's attention. In addition to teaching scales and technique, I like to bring in songs that the students enjoy to keep the lessons fun and enjoyable. I have extensive knowledge of method books and typically pick and choose aspects of each method that suit the student's learning style best.
I love giving students a space to not only learn and grow, but also to find their own creative voices and passions. It's important for each student to feel inspired and to take a more active role in their learning process, so I listen to each student individually to successfully plan lessons that will resonate with them but also push them to improve.
