I have had 2 private students for the past year both for voice: -Zoe 15 -Lucas 13 I officially started teaching while I was with The After School All-Stars teaching their school of rock band. I was with them for 3 years and in that time I was able to not only have the students perform as a band but I also taught the students how to be "techies". Not all of them wanted to play instruments but they still wanted to be a part of the group so I said Why Not?" I later on returned to my old high school and have been teaching there as a musical theater teacher. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice

My teaching experience dates back to my college days teaching private lessons both in my home studio and students' homes, and have been consistently teaching students in their homes for the last 13 years.  Encouraging younger students to have a consistent schedule for a regular practice will help the students progress and gain a passion for the instrument.  Combining classical and modern music help students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. For beginning drums students, I typically star with a simple beat that the student feels good about. From then, we start learning important concepts as dynamics, tempo, intensity, groove,... Once the student has a grasp of the fundamentals, we can take a look into learning specific songs that he/she likes, reading, new styles/approcahes, preparation for a recording, composition,... Always keeping the lessons motiviating and fun, no matter the level. Read More

I began teaching music in 2006 while still in college, and I have worked at a variety of different music schools and teaching companies, most notably at the University of Southern California. I taught and maintained a small voice studio of my own in New York City for four years before the pandemic forced me back to the west coast to care for my family. I typically work with a wide variety of students with different ages and backgrounds, and I pride myself on offering a holistic and trauma informed approach to the study of voice and singing. Instruments: Piano

I like to always start off by having the student play the piece that we've been working on for the past few weeks to check on his/her progress and to address any needs or changes we need to make. I also work with the student on his/her scales and building the foundation needed to play more technically challenging pieces. I find it very important to work on technique as many players nowadays often struggle with more difficult pieces and do not execute certain sections as smoothly due to a lack of attention during his/her early stages in building up the foundation and technique. I'm a passionate instructor who loves working with students from all levels. However, my specialty lies in teaching advanced piano students. Due to the wide variety of experience in the piano teaching career, I have had the privilege of working with advanced piano students. I have had more than 10 years of teaching piano experience ranging from working with a privately owned Montessori school in Buena Park, CA. to working for a Music School, Brea. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I also believe in the importance of listening to as many professional recordings as possible of the instrument the student is taking lessons on. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
To repeat a certain process: for a certain amount of time, continue this formula - 1. Play through the melody/note/progression many times, & build your concentration of effective execution. 2. Then, take a break for however much time to let you hands/lips & mind relax 3. Then, come back to it, and you will be surprised how much that break helped the ability to sink in.

When will I start to see results?
You will start to see positive results within the first few weeks of starting private lessons. Depending on where the student is in terms of how much they do or don't know about music, the results will of course vary. If the student is starting from scratch, the first results will be how to hold the instrument properly, how to generate a sustainable pitch, as well as becoming aware of the direction they will need to advance to become proficient in that instrument. If the student is already passed the beginning stages, the results will be more about first breaking common bad habits, and then moving onto learning more advanced skills and how the skills relate to the notation/theoretical side of understanding music.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My biggest influences on developing a life long pursuit in music are mostly from family members. My mom's dad was a trumpet player as well as a middle school music teacher for many years. With my dad's father, even though his main career was in the medical field, he was also a very talented clarinet player. As the lineage continued to my mom and dad, my mom actually discovered that she liked the clarinet more than the trumpet, and my dad discovered that he really loved the saxophone. What's cool about how they met was my dad moved to Orange County for work and met my mom in the Orange County Community Concert band. In the later months of my mother's pregnancy, she would rest her clarinet on her pregnant belly during rehearsal while she played, and a lot of the other members would tell her, "Boy, I bet that baby is going to be a very musical person when they grow up." The direct vibration of the notes from the clarinet must have touched my heart inside the womb, because I did indeed grow to be someone extremely dedicated and passionate about music.

...Without a doubt, putting a band together, writing music and performing live on stage is one of the absolute best experiences a musician can have. The Bass Trumpet- A Brief Overview

...Stölzel. Orchestral bass trumpets are offered by Alexander, Thein, Latzsch, Helmut, and Voigt. Meinl-Weston also builds horns in this category. They are keyed in C, and you will likely find a professional orchestral player using one of these during a performance of Rite of Spring or Wagner’s Ring Cycle. Thein manufacturers arguably the most accurate version of the bass trumpet.   You won’t find many people looking to purchase a bass trumpet, and you certainly won’t encounter a band director offering one to students at “choose your instrument” day. We live in a time where historically-informed performances matter, though—just ask ... Read More

He didn’t take a break from the Esterhazy family until around 1790, when he left for London (his departure was due to the fact that the newest Esterhazy heir didn’t much care for music). He eventually returned to the Esterhazy estate and after a second trip to London, ... Read More
