Overview:
I am a highly conscientious motivated instructor who wants the success of my students and I do not give up easily on anyone who is willing to practice and put forth effort. I began piano lessons at age 4, was in competitions as a child and also worked with the Sherwood School of Music in Chicago. I graduated from Cal State University with a BA in piano and music history. I love all kinds of piano music and can teach many types but my training is classical. My love of violin began at age 19 and I joined the college orchestra after 6 months of lessons. I passed ASTACAP level 9 in 2019. I returned to Fullerton College and earned my piano pedagogy certificate with 14 additional units in performance, theory and child development. I have played violin in 3 orchestras over the years and hundreds of local church/wedding/studio performances. I traveled to China with Chapman Symphony and performed 4 concerts. I currently study piano and violin with local teachers. I took 5 years of lessons in piano tuning.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience started in high school when my private teacher started teaching me how to teach. I then accepted students on a continual basis, usually working two jobs. I realized at a later point in my life that I would like to make teaching my profession and started getting more serious about how I would proceed with teaching music. I have had students for over 25 years and without a doubt, parental involvement and practice are the two main factors for success of young students, along with a good teacher. I have a mandatory recital in the spring to prepare students for their future. My love of teaching comes from the challenge of helping each individual reach their goals and the joy experienced when they do succeed.
METHODS USED
For 3-5 year olds on piano I use Wunderkeys and supplement with Bastien Music Tree and music I have written when note reading is introduced. Usually I continue into Faber and Faber but Wunderkeys is adding more method books for beginners 5+ and I may start using that once it is available for purchase. I highly encourage theory and incorporate it into lessons when time. I have use Three Cranky Women theory books and Julie McIntosh Johnson Theory. I introduce scales right away and each student usually has a technique book. I also incorporate games into lessons for young students to keep it fun. As students advance I introduce sheet music and music they like. For adults, there are a couple of chord method books by Alfred and Faber available and I use those unless they request something specific to work on. I may also write some of my own music, especially for learning note reading. That way, I can get it student specific. I have also used Step by Step for adults. For violin, I continue using whatever method book they bring and if appropriate uses Sassmannshaus or Suzuki books, Solos for Young Violinists, concertinos and other classical solo works. For learning positions and technical work I use Laoureux, Wohlfahrt. Sevcik, Kreutzer, depending on the level and age of the student.
LESSON STYLE
I use an organized step by step method as a general rule, depending on the students age and ability, seeking to have each student master the fundamentals of rhythm, note reading, technique and expression in a logical easy to understand way. I require practice at least 4 days a week to ensure progress. For preschool age children, I use the Wunderkeys method. I seek to minimize frustration, encourage students to e-mail with questions, use games as a learning tool and assign pieces they like and pieces that are standard repertoire.

You are my #1 piano teacher! Thank you for being there for me all these years and for putting up with me and my little to no practicing and tendency to forget sharps and flats. It is always a ton of fun playing duets with you and spending time with you.

I recall meeting you 11 years ago when you arrived at our doorstep with the passion for teaching in your heart and music in your soul. I cannot wait to see you continuing to inspire many other kids like me.
