Overview:
Greetings! As a performing musician I play clarinet, flute, saxophone and keyboards extensively. I am comfortable on alto, tenor and baritone saxophone. I have been soloing as a jazz musician since high school and can offer students extensive training in music theory and improvisation. I utilize piano to teach students theory and also to back them up in the lesson so they get more of an ensemble experience right in the lesson. I like for my students to play classical music by composers like JS Bach, Mozart and Beethoven but also allow much creativity from students and I encourage them to select therir own music and take an active role in their own development.
EXPERIENCE
I developed my teaching style over years of working with private students in various music studios. I write out assignments for each individual student that are based on what I hear them play and what I think they need to work on. I offer students a challenging course of study designed specifically to their talents. All students are encouraged to read and write music, to memorize music and to improvise music. I have over thirty years of experience as a music instructor in both music studios and the public school system.
METHODS USED
Lessons are geared toward instruction. In order for any instruction to be effective students must practice every day. Students who play wind instruments will learn to play duets, solo repertoire, scales, arpeggios and etudes. Students who play keyboards will be encouraged to learn a classical piece such as a sonata by Haydn or Mozart. I have developed an entire course of study for wind instruments and keyboards that will greatly accelerate a students skills and ability to handle their instrument.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is to identify what area a student needs help in and to remediate the problem by creating supplemental materials. Showing students what to practice and how to practice are key elements. My methods are geared to improve tone production, articulation, phrasing and musicality. Students should practice every day for at least thirty minutes. Lessons should not be cancelled or skipped. The closer a student gets to a set practice routine the greater is their chance for success.

My son has been studying trumpet with John for several years and has made great progress. John is patient, flexible, engaging and professional. He clearly explains and demonstrates theory and concepts, and he provides a variety of music and exercises for my son to practice with. Highly recommend.

I have been learning with John for about a year. It is a pleasure to be his student and study music theory and piano with him. John’s teaching methods have helped me make significant progress over our sessions. He has also been generous in providing supplemental material that has helped me to gain an understanding of how to approach complex musical pieces and expand my musical acumen. 5 Stars. Why couldn't the string quartet find their composer? He was Haydn.

John is a great teacher. He has a wide range of knowledge and he has tailored lessons to suit my experience and goals. He's been very patient and generous with his time. Many times he's made a suggestion which resulted a large improvement in my playing. I'm very happy with the progress I've made since starting to study with John.

John has a thorough grasp of music and is also very adept of sharing/explaining that knowledge during the lessons. You can feel his love of music and his enthusiasm rubs off on you. I thoroughly enjoyed my lessons with John and would recommend him to others as well. Valentine (Trumpet)
