Overview:
I started my musical journey in a public school music program in fourth grade. My parents took me to see musical instruments on display at a local school where I quickly became interested in studying the clarinet. At first, I didn't take to the instrument. I found it to be difficult to play and I was not a top student in elementary school or middle school but I continued to sign up every year. At the end of eighth grade I was going to quit but my parents encouraged me to try again. When I entered ninth grade I joined the marching band which was a great experience for me. We had a great band that was directed by a great band director. We played at competitions and won awards. I went on to study music at Montclair State University where I earned a BA in music education. I am now working on my MBA. The story continues.
EXPERIENCE
My experiences as a musician include performing in both classical and jazz groups. I play classical music every day and I like for my students to study a classical piece because it helps them develop technique rapidly. As a keyboard player, I emphasize the study of scales and arpeggios and playing them with both hands. Reading music and understanding music theory gives the student more independence to study and practice on their own. In lessons I encourage students to go through things slowly and correctly.
METHODS USED
I teach all of my students to read music starting with middle "C" on the grand staff. Knowing the keyboard/piano is a great place to start for all musicians because it shows where notes are and what they sound like in relation to each other. Lessons should progress based on a students willingness to follow directions and to practice the material that I assign them to practice. There are no shortcuts. I like students to choose the music that they want to play and from there we need to look at it closely and to figure out how to play it.
LESSON STYLE
I like for a student to look at a piece of music and then to explain to me what they think it is. Their perception is different than my perception and I can learn a lot about how to teach them based on how much they may already understand or do not understand. Understanding musical concepts and musical language is important and I emphasize getting basic concepts right immediately. If a student has a misconception about something I try to correct it so they can move forward make progress. The entire experience should be productive and that is where the enjoyment comes from.

John is a great teacher. He has a wide range of knowledge and he has tailored lessons to suit my experience and goals. He's been very patient and generous with his time. Many times he's made a suggestion which resulted a large improvement in my playing. I'm very happy with the progress I've made since starting to study with John.

I have been learning with John for about a year. It is a pleasure to be his student and study music theory and piano with him. John’s teaching methods have helped me make significant progress over our sessions. He has also been generous in providing supplemental material that has helped me to gain an understanding of how to approach complex musical pieces and expand my musical acumen. 5 Stars. Why couldn't the string quartet find their composer? He was Haydn.

My son has been studying trumpet with John for several years and has made great progress. John is patient, flexible, engaging and professional. He clearly explains and demonstrates theory and concepts, and he provides a variety of music and exercises for my son to practice with. Highly recommend.
