Overview:
I'm a passionate and motivated musician eager to perform and teach. I'm currently pursuing my Master's in Music degree in Percussion Performance from CSU Fullerton and have earned my Bachelor's in Music from the UC Irvine, along with getting my Associate's from Chabot College. I've had the opportunity during my undergraduate career to work with well known names such as Frank Ticheli and Pat Sheridan. I currently study percussion, but I play many other instruments including violin, guitar, and bass. My style is mainly classical/orchestral, but I'm also experienced in jazz, rock, and reggae. I love to perform, and I also enjoy teaching students from when they're first starting how to read and play music to continuing to get better as musicians.
EXPERIENCE
I currently teach at two music schools: Saturday Conservatory of Music in San Gabriel as a percussion teacher and a music teacher (drums/percussion, violin, guitar, bass, and ukulele) in Music Town in Irvine. I have also been a substitute music theory teacher at OrchePia and a volunteer piano/theory teacher for Da Capo Music in Santa Ana. I love teaching because it gives others a chance to learn how to play and read music whether they're being led to study it later on or do it as a hobby. I wanted to give kids the opportunity I never had as a kid, which was to learn how to play music at a young age, or help teens/young adults how to further advance in their playing/reading. I enjoy helping others grow!
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I start them off by introducing the instrument and the different parts of it and also get them started on basic music theory. As a percussionist, I make sure they start getting familiar with reading rhythms. Afterwards, I start them off on Elementary Drum Method by Roy Burns. Once the student gets better at the fundamentals, I introduce to them to some solo stuff either composed by me or other composers before getting them started on Musical Studies for the Intermediate Snare Drummer by Garwood Whaley. If it is an older student who hasn't had lessons before but has experience playing in a school band and can read well, then I also possibly start them with Whaley. For other instruments, I try to find out what the student is interested in and help them out along the way to keep lessons fun, engaging, and exciting.
LESSON STYLE
As soon as I meet with a student or a group of students, I make sure they are welcomed by an energetic teacher before getting started on their lesson. I try to keep the student(s) engaged by showing them different ways and approaches to music from books and my own personal approaches to help them grow knowing their teacher is well experienced. Since their is a lot for a percussionist than just playing with sticks on a drum, there is no doubt that the endless possibilities in teaching students the various instruments will help keep them engaged as well being more excited about music.
