Overview:
I have been an active performer since 2011, currently being the principal percussionist for the Southern California Philharmonic in Corona Del Mar, CA, as well as an occasional percussionist with the La Mirada Symphony, Palos Verdes Regional Symphony Orchestra, Dana Point Symphony, and Whittier Regional Symphony Orchestra. I also serve as the youth choir director at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fountain Valley. I have also had previous experience playing in musical theatre, playing for shows like Hairspray and Dr. Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical. When I'm not performing or rehearsing with various ensembles, I spends his time in my studio in Irvine where I record content for my Youtube channel, ranging from singing praise and worship to showcasing percussion performances to also presenting educational videos on how to play certain instruments. When he’s not performing, Greg keeps himself busy with his teaching schedule by teaching throughout Orange and LA County. As of this updated bio due to COVID-19 (Nov. 2020), Greg has been doing a hybrid format of teaching, primarily through Zoom with some in person instruction while maintaining orders of social distancing and wearing masks. He is currently on faculty at Santiago Canyon College, Santa Ana College, Neal Music Instruction in Anaheim, WePlay Music in Irvine, and La Serna High School in Whittier. He has previously taught at the Saturday Conservatory of Music in San Gabriel, Suzanne Middle School in Walnut, IvyCrest Montessori in Fullerton, and Music & Arts in San Dimas and Mission Viejo. Greg has also held masterclasses in percussion and drums throughout Orange and Los Angeles County.
EXPERIENCE
When I'm not performing, I keeps himself busy with his teaching schedule by teaching throughout Orange and LA County. As of this updated bio due to COVID-19 (Nov. 2020), I have been doing a hybrid format of teaching, primarily through Zoom with some in person instruction while maintaining orders of social distancing and wearing masks. I'm currently on faculty at Santiago Canyon College, Santa Ana College, Neal Music Instruction in Anaheim, WePlay Music in Irvine, and La Serna High School in Whittier. I have previously taught at the Saturday Conservatory of Music in San Gabriel, Suzanne Middle School in Walnut, IvyCrest Montessori in Fullerton, and Music & Arts in San Dimas and Mission Viejo. I have also held masterclasses in percussion and drums throughout Orange and Los Angeles County. I enjoy teaching privately because I know an individual student will be able to better improve themselves when applying their growing skills in their respective ensemble. I've seen it happen where through my instruction, students have been able to feel more confident going into practice not having to worry about technique or reading but to be able to focus more on getting down the repertoire,
METHODS USED
Drums and Percussion: Alfred's Kids Drumset Course-Dave Black and Steve Houghton Elementary Drum Method-Roy Burns Intermediate Snare Studies-Mitchell Peters Alfred's Beginning Drum Set Method-Sandy Feldstein and Dave Black Primary Handbook for Mallets-Garwood Whaley Violin: Suzuki Method Guitar: Hal Leonard Guitar Method-Will Schmid and Greg Koch Ukulele: Kid's Ukulele Course-Ron Manus and L.C. Harnsberger Bass: Hal Leonard Bass Method Ed Friedland As students begin to grasp more on fundamentals, they will be introduced along the way to various repertoire relating to their skillset or challenging them to go to the next level.
LESSON STYLE
As soon as I meet with a student or a group of students, I make sure they are welcomed by an energetic teacher before getting started on their lesson. I try to keep the student(s) engaged by showing them different ways and approaches to music from books and my own personal approaches to help them grow knowing their teacher is well experienced. Since their is a lot for a percussionist than just playing with sticks on a drum, there is no doubt that the endless possibilities in teaching students the various instruments will help keep them engaged as well being more excited about music.
