During the first lesson I always assess where the student is the learning timeline with their instrument. I also find out what the student's goals are with music. Once this has been established we work on a plan of action to acheive those goals. Since the vast majority of drum students are primarily interested in learning drumset skills, we will start working on this from the very first lesson. It was not until I was 13 years old that I had my first drumset but during all those years until then I collected and constantly played many brazilian percussion instruments, which acctually gave me a very stong foundation in drumming and also in the Brazilian popular rhythms. Very soon after, I started my professional drumming career playing for musical theater productions which led me to many other projects and soon I was showcasing as a drummer in National tours, Radio and TV programs in Brazil. I have played music since first grade, starting out on the piano. after dabbling with violin and other instruments, I gradually moved toward my current primary instrument. The drum set has revolutionized my understanding and love for this outstanding art form. I began playing in school bands all the way up through high school. For beginning students, I start with the Drummers Complete Vocabulary, which establishes good technique. Simultaneously, based on the students interests, I pick two styles that the student would like to begin working on. Once they've learnt a specific rudiment, I show them how to use that in everyday performance and get creative with it by applying that in beats, fills etc. If the student has a specific song or style that they want to learn, I help them break it down into simple parts so that they can understand and perfect it really easily.
