The student and I will begin to develop a relationship right away. Trust and communication are key. We'll see where the student stands in his or her current playing. They will usually play for a minute or so and talk out loud about their feelings on their playing. This will include thoughts like where he or she starts to get bored, gets stuck, wants to explore more, has trouble, etc. Read More

Regular practice is the cornerstone of progress, and I guide my students in developing effective practice techniques. We focus on breaking down challenging passages, working on them in isolation, and gradually integrating them into the whole piece. I also teach the art of mindful practice, encouraging students to listen closely to their playing, identify areas for improvement, and celebrate incremental victories. Performance is a crucial aspect of piano playing, as it instills confidence and provides a platform for sharing one's musical journey. Read More

I want to make sure that I foster a love and enjoyment for music in my students. Fun is the best motivator and practice is key so I hope to present my lessons in a way that makes practice an enjoyable part of the process. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students so that it feels like they are making good progress. I am never rigid in my teaching style, however! Read More

I use various methods and books depending on the style, age, ability etc. I always keep my eye out for new books and open to suggestions. A few examples. With classical guitar students who are over 10 yo I prefer to use Christopher Parkening Guitar Method and Frederick Noad "Solo Guitar Playing" The latter suits more mature (both mentally and physically) students. With younger guitar students , 6-9 yo, I usually start by using basic guitar methods such as Hal Leonard Essential elements or "Everybody's Guitar Method" and my own easy arrangements of popular songs before shifting to Parkening. First of all, I would ask the student if music would be his/her career or just a hobby. If it is to be his/her career, my approach would be more theoretical. But if it would be just a hobby like mine, I would encourage the student to learn by ear supplemented with a little theory to be able to learn a musical piece or song in the shortest time possible.
