Hello everyone! My name is Jake. I am recent graduate of Syracuse University, where I received my BM in Voice Performance. This fall, I will begin my MM in Voice at Boston Conservatory. My aspirations are to become as successful as I can in the music business, particularly in opera. While I am still very young, I have been fortunate enough to work with conductors such as Christian Capocaccia and Larry Loh, and have worked with several wonderful singers at Syracuse Opera. I've been teaching public school for 19 years, all but the first two spent in 9th grade. I've also had many years of experience as an adult church choir director. The huge majority of my singers along the way would probably tell you that I made them very comfortable. Tension is the singer's worst enemy. Tension is caused by fear, by uncertainty in one's ability, or by faulty technique. A great singer makes singing seem easy. Read More

I started on my journey when I was 18. I had been singing for several years in a Black Sabbath cover band , and I had developed vocal nodules. Back then, surgery was suggested, and so surgery I had. Thank god there was no scarring.. this traumatic experience immediately brought the study of my own voice into mothers forefront of my life as I was pursuing a career in rock at that time. Read More

For younger students, especially children, I will begin their first vocal lesson by standing next to them and showing them how to stand with correct posture. Then I will move on to breathing by having the child place their hand on their diaphragm. I will show them that it is the muscle right above their stomach. In the best way possible, I will explain to them that in order to breathe correctly, they must be able to feel their stomach move in and out instead of their chest. Read More

My teaching style is natural, relaxed and yet, very enthusiastic, all at the same time. I have patience in abundance and my continual student affirmation is well received. I give most attention to personalizing instruction for each of my students. My passion for musical expression is contagious and readily shared. It is a joy to teach music, to contribute to the growth and delight that I witness through a student's progress. Read More

I help others discover their own sound...their own voice. That is what I hope for all future generations. Not to sound like anyone else, but to sound like themselves. It's not always about knowlege, or technique, but it's about style and imagination. I will use all those things as a teacher. My goal is for my students to work with what they have in the way that works best for them. Read More

As a multi-instrumentalists, I use a cross disciplinary approach even when a student is only learning one instrument. I do make use of method books for beginners, and the specific book depends upon the instrument, but I have my own methods and materials which I utilize in my lessons. Building a repertoire is encouraged, and I use the material to assist in instructing in theory and musical communication. My students are taught to be self-sufficient, by way of practice, study, and cultivating an "ear." Read More

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Controlling your breathing and relieving unwanted tension
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
For me I try to practice between 45min to an hour every day. I start with warming up for 20-30min, working on specific technical challenges I might have. then I look at the Rep I have been working on and try to place what I've been learning in my own lessons to those pieces. Knowing that a song is never finished being worked on, no matter how well you think you know it.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
Music Performance both Bachelors and Masters, as well as Advance Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy. I wanted to learn the ins and outs of performing, the science behind performing and singing, and how to better myself and do something I love.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I believe I would be a therapist. I've always wanted to help people achieve goals, have someone to listen to them and give them advice.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Oh yes, my parents both were in choir and theatre in high school, both sang in church choir. My papaw played the organ for my church and sang in the choir until he passed away at 87. My grandfather has been singing and performing for my church for years. My sister played the flute and violin and also sings and acts, went to school for music business. My brother played the trombone and was in marching band. All my cousins did theatre and music. It just flowed through my family. Both for hobbies and careers
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
Being picked to be a participant in an Italian study abroad program. I learned so much in three weeks and changed as a performer and person.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Singing was something I always did and being on stage. I was always putting on shows at my house, being the center of attention and wanting people to look at me. And when I started to really sing, I felt like I was me, I was complete.
When will I start to see results?
Results aren't a specific time length. Little things happen within time but greater things happen when you stop waiting for results and just move with your love for music. The best thing music lessons can teach you is hard and dedication to something that brings Joy to your life.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If you child can sit through a one on one lesson for at least thirty minutes, sings all the time, excited to learn how to expand their voice and technique, expand their musical knowledge and comes alive when they sing.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Start simple. Do a warm up before bed, Look at your music when taking a break from work or homework. Make it fun.
