I've been teaching all kids and adults for over 15 years. I 'm awesome with kids (so the parents have told me!)... I don't adhere to any rigid format. I work with what level and progression suits you, and I'm super-easy to get along with. Also, I believe in positive reinforcement. There are some old school teachers who sometimes degrade a pupil when they're not doing an exercise correctly. I don't teach like it's the ancient Roman Byzantine era, where teachers would slap a student's hand with a riding crop! Read More

My greatest accomplishment in teaching over the years has been to help students enjoy the music that they really want to play. This takes a great deal of devotion and research into finding the resources that students need to find the music they love best. I am a firm believer in a positive approach to teaching, concentrating not on mindless rote repetition, but on the artistic method where students can learn to improve and always make the music more and more impressive. I will always listen to what students want to learn and play but at the same time will introduce them to music they aren’t familiar with. To be a great musician you have to be well rounded in different styles of music. I will also encourage students to express their emotions through what they play because I believe music can be very therapeutic and sometimes people have a hard to expressing themselves through talking. It is important to keep the student focused and engaged in their studies. It is rewarding in itself to have the student excited and eager to further their development of instrument. I accomplish this by adapting each student's lessons by their individual needs and desires. Read More

When working on a solo piece we will look at it as a whole, go over any terms or passages that the student has questions about and then work in sections as well as addressing the entire piece and the musicality of how to approach and play the piece. My goal is to not only help my students learn their instrument but also to help them to learn about and appreciate many aspects of music wich is one of the greatest joys of teaching. Read More

I've been teaching for over 30 years now and have pretty much enjoyed the process all along.I enjoy sharing my love of music, encouraging and seeing students discover the many benefits of music, as well as seeing them develop through the years. I've learned over the years to focus on each student's needs and help them develop the best way they can.I've realized that even though there are universal ideas in how to teach ,each person thinks and functions their own way and as a teacher I strive to be sensitive to each individual student. It has always been my joy when I see my students later on perform music that they love. Thus, I as a music teacher, would be more than willing to help my students sing and make music at their own level and eventually climbs up the musical ladder. To do this, setting standards and specific and realistic objectives are a must. During the process, regular assessments are done so that students know their accomplishments and feel more comfortable making music. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Start out small. Don't just practice the easy stuff, or the songs you already know. Set a timer for a realistic amount of practice time; maybe just 10-15mins at first. Record yourself running through songs or exercises and listen back taking notes. Also, always keep a practice log to write down what you're working on, as well as your goals! I think that listening productively to music you want to learn is also practicing, as well as working on music with other musicians. Try to constantly improve and practice consistently!
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I LOVE teaching all ages, including young beginners. I think there's something really special about introducing an instrument or sound to a child. Does your child want to get involved in their school or community musically? Are they looking for a hobby or an outlet? Music shaped who I was when I was young, and led to many life-long friendships. I think your child is ready to start lessons if they have access to an instrument, and have access to music listening sources (iPods, youtube, speakers, school concerts, etc..)
When will I start to see results?
As soon as you get your bearings on an instrument (knowing where hands go, how to produce a sound) you can start to see results. If you practice a few minutes daily, and listen to music you're passionate about your playing will grow exponentially! My goal is for a student to learn a song they like after the first two lessons, along with learning how to practice and learn songs on their own! After a couple months, I aim for students to be at an intermediate level, reading music, learning songs, and hopefully loving their instrument more than ever before.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I was a lucky kid when it came to teachers. At a young age, I was introduced to the piano and guitar by my father and the cello by a school teacher, Ms.Bonds. Their support and encouragement led me to art schools, the bass, and more influential teachers. By the time I was in high school, I knew music was the path for me. I fully believe that that was possible because of my inspiring teachers. They taught me technique, showed me music, and introduced me to other learning musicians. They showed me that music was cool, and the music community was even cooler.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Bass is my primary instrument (although I've been playing guitar for just as long). I picked the bass, because it was needed in my school band. My teacher asked if any students wanted to switch from cello to bass, and I decided to give it a go. As soon as I plucked the strings, I knew I wanted to be a bass player. I loved how the bass was used in every genre of music, and that it could help me understand jazz, classical, and rock music better. The bass taught me about the roles different instruments take in the band, and how to make a song better.
