University of Bridgeport Music Merit Scholarship
Performed at Carnage Hall
Hello my name is Katrell, I have just finished my undergrad and grad schooling from the University of Bridgeport with a degree in General Music and Music Education. I am also a audio engineer and songwriter. I work on writing/recording/mixing songs for clients. I have helped co edit a new and upcoming Broadway musical podcast and the first 3 episodes come out on 3/15/2020. I have a passion for music and have been songwriting my entire life. I am also a dancer (both cherograpy and competitive ballroom), actor, and a martial artists (4+ fighting styles).
My method of teaching will both implement teaching students how to sight read but also more importantly how to play music by ear. I am very big on learning by ear because it is the way I learned music most of my life. For younger students I do want them to start learning how to sight read at a basic level because it will make it easier for them in the long run. I also will teach my students how to become a singer songwriter since that is my specialty. At my work space, I have audio engineer station that we could possibly use to help students get a better grasp on learning what it’s like to write a song. I could possibly even throw in how to use the equipment at a basic level.
My teaching style is very laid back and comforting for students to progress at their own pace. I will always remind students to not rush and encourage them to have confidence within themselves. The most important thing for a musician to have is CONFIDENCE!!!!!! It’s important to develop that at a young age because it will make performances easier as they get older. For older students I will help them develop the confidence because I believe it’s never to late. I will always listen to what students want to learn and play but at the same time will introduce them to music they aren’t familiar with. To be a great musician you have to be well rounded in different styles of music. I will also encourage students to express their emotions through what they play because I believe music can be very therapeutic and sometimes people have a hard to expressing themselves through talking.
Katrell has solid skills on several instruments and is a very caring teacher who is good at individualizing instruction for private students. He has worked in a variety of genres and styles. Katrell has taught children, teenagers, young adults, and adults, and has significant experience working with students with special needs. As his former teacher and advisor, I recommend him to anyone looking to take lessons. - Dr. Frank Martignetti, Chair, Dept. of Music & Performing Arts, University of Bridgeport
Mr. Katrell has walked me through music theory, as well as the details of the guitar. As an adult student, I was nervous about picking up an instrument but I am now pretty confident I can learn how to play the guitar. Thanks for the great lesson and I look forward to many more!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
OkAre you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
