ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Self-taught Professional Musician and have been an instructor for 20+ years.

Overview:
Over the past 40 years, I have been involved with several different “R&B” bands and played various college circuits, also playing in local clubs and many private parties. I have had a wonderful opportunity to meet and play with many professional musicians in my career. My approach to teaching is to customize lessons based upon the individuals’ age, current skill level, and personal goals. Teaching them how to read music, phrase their sound and control the dynamics to produce a cohesive piece of music. My students often record their lessons, which allows them the ability to hear their progress week to week and helps them to focus on the areas in need. Many of my students have credited me as having had a positive influence on them to continue their music education at the college level, and they have become accomplished musicians.
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching private guitar and bass lessons in my early twenties. As an instructor, I understand first-hand how important it is to have patience while learning because it doesn't happen overnight. However, with time, practice and consistency you'll keep the momentum going all the while achieving noticeable improvement. I get extreme satisfaction of bringing along novice guitar and bass players, as it reminds me of when I first started. I can help bring them along on their journey to whatever goals they may want to achieve. If I can be an integral part of that journey, nothing would please me more.
METHODS USED
I use several different method books for teaching. The books I typically use are Alfred's Basic Guitar, Mel Bay's beginner books as well as Hal Leonard's melody books. I teach beginner students the basics of how to properly hold their guitar, hand and finger placement, and simple note reading and chords. For more advanced students I teach theory and how they can apply it in order to be more creative. For adults, I find out what genre of music they would like to learn and help steer them in that direction.
LESSON STYLE
I try to incorporate some form of a goal to achieve, whether its a recital, audition, or just an informal get together with another student. In order to reach these goals its very important to instill proper practice techniques. So for weekly assignments, I have the student's practice scales, finger exercises, and chord changes. At each lesson, we review the previous week's assignment and address any playing challenges or difficulties. For more advanced students area of phrasing, dynamics, and chordal nuances.

A great guy. Personable. Feel like I'm on track to getting better and he's helped me have a big insight almost every lesson so far. I plan on continuing with him.

Mike was exactly what I was looking for in a guitar teacher. I am a true beginner, he listed to my goals, provided realistic expectations and teaches with patience. I love working with him

Michael is exactly what I was looking for in a teacher. The first thing he did was to determine what I wanted to get out of lessons, and what my existing skill level is. He is now aiming me in the right direction - and he is clearly skilled, experienced and knowledgeable, in addition to being very easy to get along with. I'm very happy.

I have been taking guitar lessons from Michael the last 4 weeks and he has brought back my passion to learn again. I have tried several times to learn on my own and in every case I just got stuck and there was no improvement. I would get frustrated and give up. Michael is a very patient and informative instructor who has gotten me to play the best I ever had and it only took a couple of weeks. I recommend anybody who wants to learn how to play the guitar to give Michael a chance. You won't be disappointed!
