Overview:
I'm a Music Teacher/Vocal Coach in the Connecticut area where I began singing and playing the piano at the age of nine from various teachers throughout the area including the Neighborhood Music School and the Educational Center for the Arts. In 1992 I obtained a Bachelors in Music Education from Berklee College of Music and a M.F.A from Liberty University in Music and Worship.
I have toured Europe with the Glory Gospel Singers, she has also performed in several off-Broadway Productions including Ragtime, with the Round Table Players, and Hairspray with the Whitney Players in which I portrayed the character Motormouth Maybelle. I was a Music Teacher in the New Haven Public School system for 10 years, and then moved on to become the Music Coordinator at the Highville Charter School for eight years. In addition I had the pleasure of being a vocal/coach at the Amity Music Academy in Woodbridge, CT in I moved on to the New Haven Academy of the Performing Arts teaching vocals/piano lessons, and she was also the Music Director of the Musical Theater Intensives. Tara has been the assistant director of the children’s choir at the First Baptist Church in Milford CT and the Vacation Bible School Music Director.
Tara is a Standardized Patient Actress for five different organizations to help train future doctors on how to handle patients of different ethnic cultures.
EXPERIENCE
I was a Music Teacher in the New Haven Public School system for 10 years, and then moved on to become the Music Coordinator at the Highville Charter School for eight years. In addition she had the pleasure of being a vocal/coach at the Amity Music Academy in Woodbridge, CT in which she moved on to the New Haven Academy of the Performing Arts teaching vocals/piano lessons, and she was also the Music Director of the Musical Theater Intensives, while at the New Haven of Performing Arts, I had the pleasure of joining an organization called International Voice Teachers of Mix, in which I am consistently being educated on the voice specifically mix technique . Tara has been the assistant director of the children’s choir at the First Baptist Church in Milford CT and the Vacation Bible School Music Director.
METHODS USED
Using the techniques modeled from the International Voices of Mix, an assessment is taking on the syllable Ahh, on either a 5 tone scale or 8 tone. This is done to listen for various breaks in voice. Once this is discovered different different vocal exercises are then orchestrated to begin the process of strengthening the less stronger parts of the voice. Songs will be chosen to accommodate the students voice and interest.
For Piano methods I primarily use the Alfred line of piano books, incorporating the finger power line of books to strengthen finger and rhythm technique.
LESSON STYLE
More important than vocal and piano technique, it is also important to me that my students have and continue to build a healthy strong self esteem. At times songs are chosen to help students feel more positive about themselves, and having healthy enlightening dialogue in the lyrics encouraging them not to give up, and believe in themselves and to dream the biggest dreams. When a student feels great about who they are, them performing great follows suit. They begin to understand the importance of having discipline in turns of practicing and and having a strong work ethic.
