With students that are full beginners, I like to start them out with some reading to show them how time is divided and how to identify notes on the staff. I've found that finding notes on the staff helps them learn the notes on the fretboard faster and easier. I use a book called Guitar Method Book 1 by Hal Leonard. For students who are more advanced, I will focus on their time feel, sound, and music theory. Read More

I found my calling as a teacher two years ago, back in Dubai, when I was asked to help a friend's sister with a learning disability to play the guitar. My proudest achievement came when, during one of our lessons, she started playing the chords to Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and sang along beautifully. After that, I was hooked. I started putting up ads in the street and, in no time, I was getting dozens of calls a day. Read More

For my younger to play games with them that teaches them the fundamentals of music theory while also having fun during the lesson. For my older students I like to see what gets them excited during the lesson and move forward accordingly. That can be extremely different from Student to Student but I do like to stay involved with the process and positive throughout. It doesnt necessarily matter how experience they all as my usual students get up to speed within the space of a month, if not shorter. Read More

I chose songs based on the taste and goals of each student I teach, and make sure to go over different technique and musical devices found in different songs. Initially when working with new students I like to begin with learning to play some songs and developing some basic fundamental skills, and then circling back and going back over any theory. Piano Marvel and Alfred's piano methods are a great start for all ages as they have books that are geared toward both younger and older beginners. For guitar and bass there are various Hal Leonard books that work well; one thing that I try to do with guitar and bass students is encourage them to know what note they are playing and to eventually read music notation if they are curious and interested in it. For small children, I like to teach from the same book I first learned how to play guitar from. But, for older students, I like to base our lessons on their interests. Generally, I will ask a student if there is a song they really like. If so, we will learn the song by ear, or by sheet music for those interested, and break down all of its pieces. Then, once we understand the inner workings of the music, we will apply it to different situations. Read More
