I always teach based of what the student knows and/or what the student is interested in. I teach technical aspects, as well as repertoire and music theory. A healthy vocal sound is our number one priority. I integrate music theory within a students music lessons through their repertoire. Students will become familiar with sight-singing melodies and rhythms of various levels. I will introduce repertoire appropriate for the voice type and technical skill level. Read More

My teaching method include a combination of technique, artistry, interpretation, expression, musicality, and repertoire. This approach attempts to build synthesis and synergy between the different elements of musicmaking—both vocal and instrumental: the development and honing of sound technique provided a basis for informed and tasteful musicality as well as, by extension, effective and meaningful interpretation and performance of literature. At the same time, an awareness of and attention to expression, emotion, and interpretation informs the building and practice of technique, giving it context and artistic function. Read More

I have recently agian started teaching in the fall of 2014 after being on a medical hiatus. I have grown in helping my students develop a strong sense of technique, rhythm and develop a strong classical backgound while also continuing to help students develop a sense of who they are throughout thier music. I desire students to have a strong foundation in technique but also make sure that they pursue a genre that they love and are passionate about. Read More

Advanced vocal students will always do warm-up exercises. There are certain books that are used that have scales and other things that make warming up artsy. The Vaccai exercise books are the best in that area of training. Whether voice, piano, organ or any other instrument, music theory is important. I will try to imcoporate music theory within each, as it is helpful in many areas, especially for advances students who will have to learn it as they progress in their studies. Read More

Each student is different and I try to cater to each individual's learning style. For little ones and young musicians, I use a game board with all kinds of fun music activities and tasks to land on and play. I'm a fan of the Alfred instructional book series especially for beginners. Depending on what each student would like to achieve, I like to plan out a timeline to stay on track. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Focus is key. No matter the skill level of the student, or the difficulty of the subject matter, with the right amount of concentration, a dedicated student will be able to gain the self discipline to naturally push their abilities.
As a music teacher/ instructor I feel that it is important to give a certain amount of criticism to my students, while still remaining a positive figure of inspiration. I have had a wide range of music instructors in my past and the ones that I feel have been the most effective are the ones that remained positive and patient throughout my development.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child can independently express the want to learn a musical instrument on their own, then yes, I believe they are ready to start lessons. It may also be important to consider what goals you have in mind for your child though. I believe that learning a musical instrument, especially at a younger age, can beneficial for a child's growth and development, not only on an academic level, but on a social level as well. It can help improve memory, hand eye coordination, along with reading and comprehension skills.
When will I start to see results?
It varies from student to student depending on their age, development, and dedication. I have had beginner students, younger than 12 years old, able to play full compositions in their first 6 months. Regardless of that, it's important to be patient with every student. Everyone has their own way of learning and developing, and it's easy to get frustrated when you don't see physical results right away. It's my job to try and see where a student's current shortcomings are and help develop them in the right way.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My band/ music technology teacher back in high school was an inspiring figure to me. I feel fortunate to learn early in my life the value of hard work and dedication.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Before I took my first formal music lesson, I was always singing as a child. By the time I came to be a teenager playing bands across my hometown in New Jersey, music was already a driving passion, but I never saw myself as the "lead singer" type. The vocals initially became my primary instrument only because I never played in a band with anyone who had the ability to carry a tune like I did, let alone the confidence to deliver a quality performance. By naturally pursuing my love for music, my primary instrument came to me on its own.

My grand daughter is interested in playing the piano. We have one in our home and she is always playing it, and pretending she is writing songs. She is 7.
