I start my first lessons by having students play their favorite song. I do this only for students who have played the trombone before. I use this to see what level they are at. For beginners I with the fundamentals and get them playing right away. I have a variety of etudes, exercises, solo pieces and techniques. I teach my students how to perform and to be a professional. My road to teaching starts with getting to know my student. It is the music they listen to, play, or wish to play that helps me to identify specifically what aspect of their Instrument they wish to explore, expand on and refine. I do believe that goals in the form of pieces of music as a graduating accomplishment are absolutely necessary. Initially, simple and easy to understand repertoire is introduced as to develop the necessary fundamentals. Read More

I am always intrigued when one of my students makes a breakthrough in their learning. Music is a type of adventure that allows for building blocks to build on top of one another. Students work at their own pace. When a students is ready to move onto the next level, we will advance. Allowing students to see and hear their improvement encourages students to keep pushing through learning their instrument. Read More

I work for Fresno Unified as a certificated substitute teacher and am getting my teaching credentials, so I am used to working with students of all ages as well as adults. I would prefer to teach at my home in Clovis, and while I don't exactly have a music studio I do have a quiet, comfortable place to play. I even have a bass and amp you could use if you don't have your own gear. Read More

I like to give my students a range of music they can choose from something that they would like to play, something that would make them want to practice because they are interested in learning It. All my students will have homework. They have till the next time I see them which is usually a weeks time period. This is important because it can’t be too much work it has to be engaging and fun but technical so that the student can improve their skills. Read More

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I feel like I have had several accomplishments and awards with music, but the things I’m most proud of are the moments I’ve had as a teacher. There is just no feeling cooler than watching something click for one of your students, and watching them grow and create their own accomplishments.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I originally wanted to play the flute, and they stuck me on trombone! I was so upset at first, but they told me I would get more scholarships being a girl trombone player, haha! While this wasn’t true, this is what got me started! I was very bad when I started and couldn’t even make a sound on my instrument. However, once I finally figured it out, I fell in love with my instrument and it has been a huge part of my life ever since!
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Breaking things apart! When practice sessions aren’t going how we would like them to, often it’s because you are trying to process more information than your brain can handle in the moment. This can look like breaking it down to a few measures at a time, or breaking down the elements (play only the rhythm, play only the notes, etc).
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Lessons are for every student at every level! A student is ready to be in lessons if they’re ready to put time and dedication into their instrument. If students are not prepared to work on their instrument outside of their lesson, they might not be ready for the commitment to lessons.
When will I start to see results?
Results as a musician are like results from working out. Every time you work out, you’re getting stronger, but you might not see muscle definition for a while. Some elements can give instant gratification, but most of the skills we work on might not feel that different until there is a large change. This is because the progress we make as musicians happens a little bit at a time.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I was always inspired by my band directors! As a child, I loved band. I was truly a band kid at heart and put everything I had into it. All of my directors were very encouraging and helpful, and gave me lessons (as this wasn’t something available to me at my school). As I’ve gone through college, I have had several teachers that were very encouraging and have inspired me to be the same for my students.
