Instruments: Violin

My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons part time. Hearing beautiful playing and imaging beautiful sounds is what I emphasize to students. When they have high goals to aim for they gain a passion to pursue great violin playing and enjoy music. Discovering ways to make the violin achieve their ambitions is my job. I love when the student smiles during his or her lesson! Read More

My musical background and experience started my early years. My family and I sang together, in church, in school, and in shows and special events. I began studying singing and song leading with my father at age six, piano with my mother at age seven, and guitar with my cousin at age thirteen. Through the years, my love of music—performing, learning, teaching, and sharing has never waned. My college studies focused on voice, church music, and conducting, and my graduate work emphasized choral music performance, music education, theory, and history. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Music

I am fairly new to teaching, but have taught 1-4 grade general music, 5-6 grade choir, and am currently a high school choir director. I have performed in many choral settings including professional choirs with full orchestras. I have made debuts in operas. I have also directed and assisted choirs in the learning process and in performance. To create a healthy vocal sound, I encourage vocalizing everyday for at least 30 minutes. Read More

Instruments: Bass Guitar

I believe in teaching the basics first and working on technique and just being able to play the instrument before anything else. Most people learning guitar (bass or otherwise) want to start rocking right away, and I think that's great! It's a less "academic" instrument than playing the piano or harp, so I don't see the problem with that. Also, it's your money and I want to see you satisfied :) It is important to know what notes you are playing, especially if the student wants to play with other musicians, so that is a must, as well. I really find it important that a student moves at their on pace. This is encouraged by setting feasible goals for each student and to make sure that they are able to progress with no frustration. I also acknowledge a students accomplishes that way they are likely to feels confident and motivated for further progression. I always find out what inspires my student and what they wish to accomplish. My job as a teacher is to guide students in the right path. Read More

Instruments: Trumpet

Although I have not had any official students, I have taught a handful of my fellow peers throughout my years as a trumpet player. I have learned a magnitude of techniques and different approaches from the numerous and excellent trumpet teachers that I have taken lessons from and I hope to relay some of this information to my own students as well as my own ideas and thoughts. The most important thing that I have learned from taking lessons for over 6 years is that in order to be a great teacher you must be a great learner. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Organ Synthesizer Keyboard

I started teaching piano in other people's homes soon after I became a student at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, CA. Since I sang mostly at church, people asked me if their children could learn more about music from someone who has worked on it for a long time. By the time I went to Fresno State, I wasn't able to teach nearly as much, and probably needed teaching, myself! Read More

Instruments: Lute

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I was very drawn to plucked Instruments my whole life, really. The Lute, my primary Instrument, is basically a time machine or window into another world of absolute grandiose and beauty. I was drawn to it's gentle and bell like quality. It just felt so true and mysterious.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My mentor and dear friend changed my life and view of music. His name is Andreas Martin, and he is the finest musician I know. Although I met him later in my career, it was as if I was renewed musically, setting off on a new journey to Ithaca!

What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I'd love to play Marco Dall'aquilla's 54th Ricercar (which I am practicing.) It is written just after the Medieval period, in the Phyrigian Mode - the mode of the soul.

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I prefer to create individual lesson plans as students are all different-minded. However, I do enjoy old literature (1550-1770) about technique regarding Fretted Instruments. (Don't worry, you don't have to speak French or Italian - I will translate ?)

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Having a structure and interior vision of your goals is really important. Playing music appropriate for your level is key, and moving on when needed is sometimes hard to do. I believe this is where a tutor can be immensely helpful. In that regard, practice should be just that - practicing the necessary techniques, fundamentals and observing the correct hand postures are imperative.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I really love to play music from the Early Renaissance and Late Baroque with everything in between! It is beautiful and thoughtful music. The satisfaction of refining your interpretation is the greatest feeling.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
First, my practice plan of selected music. Then, a warm up that is based on the given music, both for left and right hand. From there, the music is addressed phrase by phrase as to create smaller pieces of music within the music.

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Many Lutenists and Guitarists would agree that consistency of articulation is their premier nemesis! The ability to play in a way that is accurate and meaningful is always the most important and most difficult aspect of playing.

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Indeed, many of my students went on to win competitions such as the Young Talent Award, Classical Guitar Summit Championship and Musician of the Year (Junior College)

If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
Working on Instruments, no doubt. It's hard to imagine myself not involved in music at some capacity. Perhaps if I weren't a player, I'd want to make and repair.

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
Certification of Performance and Musical History - It is my life's passion indeed. As a player, I wanted to share music at recitals and small, quiet events.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I like to advocate that when the initial interest and ability to hold the Instrument occurs - it is time. Generally, this is about the age of 7. However, you, the parent, know your child and when they could confidently approach a fun lesson with the ability to retain the information.
