With beginning students, and even with advanced students, it is important to first agree on a common vocabulary, and asses the level of fluidity in reading musical notation. Next are some basic written exercises to correlate notation and playing in the mind of the student. This initial theoretical tie-in allows for a more substantial expansion in understanding in the long term, as well as a strong basis for the development of one's improvisational capacity. Read More

Whatever instrument private studies we are working on, a balanced approach of performance, literature, theory, and technique are studied. Once the groundwork is established, we even work through composition on their chosen instrument. Students work at their own pace. I have some students who move quite swiftly through their levels, and that is great. Others may need more time, and that is fine. I do find that students who utilize regular and purposeful home practice will tend to get through levels a fair amount quicker. Read More

I ask all of my students to be prepared for their lessons with a notebook and pencil for lesson notes and assignments. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. I believe in writing down notes that help students understand what they are learning, exactly what students should practice, and setting goals for their practice and overall progress. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a lifelong passion for music! Therefore, its important that each student progresses an his or her pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals and creating a custom tailored game plan to achieve these markers. I encourage a no pressure environment where my students feel safe to make mistakes while learning, after all music should be fun!! The further we get through material the more comfortable they feel asking questions and branching out into new forms of music they learn along the way. Read More

My teaching experience goes all the way back to when I was in high school. I was teaching my peers outside of school, giving them lessons, helping them with music theory, etc., and I have helped more than one of them go on to music school with me. Ive been teaching guitar lessons on their own for 10 years, starting by teaching beginners and working my way up to more advanced teaching about 5 years ago. Read More

As an analyst I developed a fascination with the science and theory of music and as an intuitive person with the raw mysteries of improvised playing. I have a degree in Music Composition with a focus in piano and guitar. I have been teaching ever since I developed my own understanding of Music Theory. I have always been fascinated with teaching music to others and developing new ways of understanding. Read More

Practice Practice Practice! and wanting to practice. Probably the most important thing in music at first. The biggest problem is method in itself. There is not just one way to teach everyone. Music is a lifelong study. It never ends. So learning should be the encouragement of accomplishment. Which has to involve learning some theory but focus on mechanical and listening skills as well. Whether we practice the same drum beat over and over or strumming the same chords its here that we find what we call music. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
