Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a lifelong passion for music! Therefore, its important that each student progresses an his or her pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals and creating a custom tailored game plan to achieve these markers. I encourage a no pressure environment where my students feel safe to make mistakes while learning, after all music should be fun!! The further we get through material the more comfortable they feel asking questions and branching out into new forms of music they learn along the way. Read More

This will vary given the student's abilities and particular intentions for study. In general, I focus on five distinct areas of learning: technique, theoretical understanding, reading, intuitive playing/learning by ear, and performance. I like to keep each lesson fluid and organized, by maintaining structure within segments of study. Within these segments we may venture into something unanticipated, so long as the student expresses interest, readiness, and the ability to learn. Read More

I like to focus on songs that students are interested in. I also recommend certain books to be used as supplementary learning. For children guitarists I recommend Alfred's Kid's Guitar Course. For older guitarists I recommend Hal Leonard's Guitar Method. For children pianists I recommend Faber Piano Adventures. Read More

To me it is one of the greatest rewards to see my students understand a concept or play a difficult passage. I believe it's important for each student to progress at his or her own pace because everyone has a different mindset. I often tell my students to just work on the first and second staff of the music so they don't overload themselves with work. Setting reasonable goals fuels the students desire to progress and gets them excited to continue learning more. Read More

In High School, my music practice skills carried over to my academic studies and I was able to graduate with Honors, a 4.00, and earn 14 scholarships to attend college to become a musicteacher. Since then, I have had the privilege ofteaching1000's of students, and mentoring several college students. One of my favorite examples is a student I startedteachingin 4th Grade who later added lessons for 3 other instruments and accomplished his dream of making it into the Chicago Symphony Youth Orchestra. As stated above, I believe that emotion plays an integral role in the mastery and performance of any instrument. Consequently, my teaching style revolves around the use and application of emotion in play. A simple example of this would be a simple discussion of the differences between major and minor chords and the relative emotion conveyed by each, as interpreted by the student. Positive reinforcement also comes into play as each step the student takes towards applying their emotional self to their instrument is recognized and acknowledged. Read More

I started studying around 5 years old and went through alot of instruments and eventually realized that I was really motivated by singing. I auditioned for Performing Arts High School and ended up getting accepted my junior year of high school. This was a big thing for me as I learned about the different levels of music prowess and it opened me to other styles. Since the age of 14 I played in a band of some sort. Read More
