Instruments: Piano Voice
For my voice students, I generally do not use a method book since I believe each student will have different goals and different tastes in music. While I believe that classical training is beneficial to develop strong technique, I also know that we can help you to develop a solid technical foundation through all styles of singing including pop, jazz, musical theatre and folk. For your first lesson we will discuss your desires and goals, and from there I will provide sheet music, handouts, and other supplemental materials. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
I make sure to first introduce my students musical fundamentals, then progress to repertoire that is appropriate for the students' age and skill level. I scaffold learning concepts and sequence them so that students can confidently progress from one level to another. Music theory is woven into my teaching methods, strengthening students' understanding of their instrument. For piano, I like to teach from the Faber Piano Adventures books. For voice, I implement vocal exercises that can be easily replicated and practiced. Read More
Instruments: Voice Fiddle Music
I will always encourage each student, because I believe that everybody has musical ability, and I like to keep competition to a minimum. Everybody has strengths and weaknesses, and it's important to acknowledge the student's strengths as often as possible! The weaknesses are just what we're there to work on. I like to emphasize improvisation, as it's a skill that will follow you everywhere. Above all, though, I want the student to be happy and to love what they're doing. Read More

I ask all of my students to be prepared for their lessons with a notebook and pencil for lesson notes and assignments. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. I believe in writing down notes that help students understand what they are learning, exactly what students should practice, and setting goals for their practice and overall progress. Read More

I would describe my methodology as strength-based but rooted in patience and enjoyment. As each student brings with them characteristics that are physical, mental as well as emotional, learning these characteristics allows me insights which form the creative process. For example, I had a student years ago that had a finger anomaly (he had been bit on the finger by his wife's cat so we called it "cat scratch finger") and this prevented him from laying his ring finger flat on his fretting hand. Once a three-year-old banging out chords on a piano, now a thriving cellist, pianist, percussionist, composer, and amateur recording engineer, my name is Rhett "Ret/R.D.C." North and I am a passionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic instructor who loves getting people excited about music! I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Composition and career certification in Music Technology, and my favorite part in everything I do is joining musicians, from beginner to master, in the joy of learning music. The most rewarding thing is watching a student achieve their goals. Therefore I tend to help them set realistic goals for each lesson and allow them to progress at his/her own pace, all while having fun doing so. I acknowledge achievements and tailor my teaching to their needs, because I realize not one person is the same so neither is my teaching. Read More
