As stated above, I believe that emotion plays an integral role in the mastery and performance of any instrument. Consequently, my teaching style revolves around the use and application of emotion in play. A simple example of this would be a simple discussion of the differences between major and minor chords and the relative emotion conveyed by each, as interpreted by the student. Aside from vocal music, I also played in the wind ensemble on trumpet and had my own funk outfit outside of classes to fullfill my own creative direction. After graduating in the Winter of '11 I moved to Colorado to find a better audience for the funk, jazz and fusion music that I have personally gravitated towards. I've played most of the major venues in Denver, Boulder and the Front Range opening for giants like Victor Wooten and John Medeski, and currently am pursuing my Masters this upcoming Fall for Jazz Composition. While I believe that classical training is beneficial to develop strong technique, I also know that we can help you to develop a solid technical foundation through all styles of singing including pop, jazz, musical theatre and folk. I make sure to first introduce my students musical fundamentals, then progress to repertoire that is appropriate for the students' age and skill level. I scaffold learning concepts and sequence them so that students can confidently progress from one level to another. Music theory is woven into my teaching methods, strengthening students' understanding of their instrument. For piano, I like to teach from the Faber Piano Adventures books.
