I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. Aside from vocal music, I also played in the wind ensemble on trumpet and had my own funk outfit outside of classes to fullfill my own creative direction. After graduating in the Winter of '11 I moved to Colorado to find a better audience for the funk, jazz and fusion music that I have personally gravitated towards. I've played most of the major venues in Denver, Boulder and the Front Range opening for giants like Victor Wooten and John Medeski, and currently am pursuing my Masters this upcoming Fall for Jazz Composition. For prospective voice students under age 12, I'll primarily work with them on ear training and music theory basics, as well as simple songs. Protecting vocal health is important, and under age 12, it can be difficult to sing with good technique, as the vocal chords aren't developed quite yet! For beginning Clarinet lessons I start with the basics and fundamentals from assembling and disassembling the instrument along with proper cleaning, Storage and proper placement of fingers for playing and basic breathing techniques.
