I believe it's important for each student to progress at his or her own pace because everyone has a different mindset. I often tell my students to just work on the first and second staff of the music so they don't overload themselves with work. As a teacher, it’s difficult to learn by being rushed or lagging behind, so I believe it’s important that every student is able to learn at their own pace. I encourage this by highlighting accomplishments, no matter how small, so that way it can encourage a student to want to keep learning.
