I taught Elem./Secondary Music for 30 years in IA and CO. As of this writing, I have been teaching private piano lessons for 35 years. I also served as Colorado (CMEA) State Chair of Elem. As a big believer in scales as the building blocks of good technique and music itself, I provide basic exercises as early on as possible. For intermediate and advanced students, I like to use the first lesson as an opportunity to hear a piece or two that they've played before, then work on some of the things they've already learned so I can determine what sorts of ideas they respond to and what they can work on improving. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. As a teacher, it’s difficult to learn by being rushed or lagging behind, so I believe it’s important that every student is able to learn at their own pace. I encourage this by highlighting accomplishments, no matter how small, so that way it can encourage a student to want to keep learning.
