The written basis for the logic I'd already been hearing enraptured me. Then as now, an increase in my understanding of music theory equates directly to a practical application on multiple instruments. I have taught private guitar and piano lessons for the last four years. I really love sharing all I can with others to enable them to have a fun and fulfilling experience in learning music. An approach I favor with students is to help them learn songs that they pick and then use those songs as a springboard to teach skills such as technique, reading music, theory, and improvising. For beginning students I teach the fundamentals: holding the instrument, explaining how it works, and then how to make a sound. I focus on sound first and foremost, trying to make a pure sound, and then hearing and being able to understand how the instrument works. I don't get into simply reading exercises until the student has a firm grasp and enthusiasm for the instrument. With older students I work with what their goals are; for example if All-State Band is the goal we focus on playing band excerpts and the level of fundamentals needed to get there. Read More

I picked up my Aunt's clarinet at 3 years of age -- and never put it back again.  27 years later, I continue to play in many different community bands and orchestras. The only thing I love more than playing music is teaching it. I have taught music in both charter schools and private lessons for the last 10 years and have a patient approach with my students. I believe that music should be fun and go out of my way to help my students find the fun in the lessons we are learning while customizing the lessons to them and their learning style. Read More
