I believe in positive affirmation and goal setting. My goal with all students is that they enjoy learning, become self-motivated to practice, and consider their musical abilities as a gift which they can choose to share with others whenever they feel comfortable to do so. I have experience using a variety of method books and can easily recommend appropriate materials. I also encourage students to share with me and allow me to help them learn their favorite music, as well, even if that involves writing it out with or for them. Read More

The key goal for me as a teacher is making sure that my student is enjoying what they're doing. Music is supposed to be fun after all! I achieve this by allowing my student to progress at their own pace while they develop both their knowledge of music and their enjoyment of the craft. I like to really dig into fundamentals by making sure that they are FUNdamentals! A student will learn more if they are enjoying the process, and that is key to making a long lasting impact, and instilling in a student that they will have all the tools they need to become the best musician they can. Throughout my musical career I have used many method books to improve my playing anywhere from beginning band books on up to the Arbans trumped method and have gained knowledge from each and everyone of them. Each of the many books I have used have been valuable in making me the player that I was. The information that I have gained through studying this material has helped me become the teacher that I am today, and my goal when teaching any student is to pass on what has been given to me throughout my lifetime. Standing on stage with great musicians is the most effective way to learn music. That’s because music is an aural tradition, meaning music is taught by ear, often thru singing. Just like language. How did you learn to speak English? Not by reading books, but by jamming with words and speaking with masters of the language. Jamming (with notes or words) is the act of exchanging ideas with another person, a conversation. Read More

For beginning flutists, I typically start with the Rubank Elementary Method so that they can have a basic grasp of the fundamentals. Beyond that, I introduce books according to their musical goals and needs. Some of the books my students have studied out of are the Rubank Intermediate/Advanced books and the Melodious and Progressive Studies edited by Cavally. In addition, I have each student regularly work on solo literature so that they can put their hard work on fundamentals into practice. Read More

I began teaching private lessons in Chicago in 2002, while in an Educational Administration Masters Program at DePaul University. I quickly discovered the gratification that comes from sharing and teaching music. I've taught students of all ages and abilities and enjoy the variation in the lessons within this scope. I have taught in conventional school settings as well as from the road while on tour. I currently provide private lessons and group classes on several instruments, both at Swallow Hill Music in Denver, CO and to students worldwide via my website: JarettsJammers.com Read More
