I am comfortable teaching with many piano methods. Some of my favorites include Alfred, Faber and A Dozen a Day Series. For more advanced students, I often recommend the Music for Millions Series or Bastien Piano Literature. For jazz, I often use Hal Leonard's "Your First Fake Book" and the "Joy of Jazz". All my students also get a strong foundation in scales and theory. I also stress learning all the notes on the grand staff and there are many good apps for this on tablets and smart phones. Read More

I have a relaxed teaching style. And once a student has the basics, I offer them a selection of pieces to play. After all, who wouldn't want to play music they like, rather than something they have to do! The jokes are free, but my teaching is priceless. I am quite aware, that each student advances at their own rate. And along those lines, they are also taught how to practice correctly. Read More

For children I use the "Teaching Little Fingers to Play" series by John Thompson. I do this because because the top of each page has a diagram of how the notes on the staves as well as the diacritical marks are played on the piano. When this series is done done I try to find music that is rich in nuance and subtlety if the the student likes classical music such as the "Favorite Classical Melodies" or the "Performance Primer level" series by James Bastien or American classic music ranging all the way from Stephen Foster to St. Read More

I emphasize both notes and rhythms in my teaching, and for both notes and rhythms, I strongly believe in the importance of being able to not only read them, but hear and feel them as well. These aural skills are an immense part of accelerating a student's development, helping them learn and memorize music quickly, familiarizing them with music theory, and creating a close personal relationship between themselves and their musical studies. When it comes to teaching, the one constant look for in all of my students is a budding passion for music. For some, it may take more time to develop said passion, but that is okay! Everyone moves at their own pace, and it differs from person to person. I firmly believe everybody has things they are good at, regardless of skill level, and I do everything in my power to hone in on those skills to make them the best they can be. Read More

I recommend students who are beginners to utilize Alfred's Basic Piano Library Course (four levels) and Five-Star Solos, as these two method books have the organized systems and clear protocols to let players progress yet can review the fundamentals at the same time. For intermediate level, I prefer Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Basic Adult Country Book. I also recommend Contemporary Piano literature Book 2, Broadway Classics from the Young Pianist's Library Volume A, and the FJH Pianist's Curriculum Recital Book. Read More
