As a multi-instrumentalists, I use a cross disciplinary approach even when a student is only learning one instrument. I do make use of method books for beginners, and the specific book depends upon the instrument, but I have my own methods and materials which I utilize in my lessons. Building a repertoire is encouraged, and I use the material to assist in instructing in theory and musical communication. For voice students, I have my own curriculum to help them know how to use their voice in a good way. For piano beginning students I typically start with Piano Adventures method. For Flute students, I start with Rubank Elementary method. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire. I have song lists that have songs in different styles and levels for the student to choose from, and I also encourage students bringing songs they like to keep the lessons engaging and fun. When teaching guitar I often use the Hal Leonard Method for younger students. I am a big fan of the Berklee Modern Method books for those who learn a little faster. For piano I also have found several methods I like and often use the Hannon Piano exercise book as supplement. I consider myself mainly a jazz/cabaret singer, but I sing in many styles and genres. I also write my own music. I am working on my third album. I am very proud to say that my music has been played on radio stations throughout the U.S., Canada, South Africa, Australia, and Russia, and worldwide through the Siriusly Sinatra channel on SiriusXM radio. I began teaching private piano and voice lessons in the Boston area after college, and taught for eight years at after-school programs. I learned my style from my mother, who taught piano out of our home when I was growing up. She would try to make learning the basics fun and would choose pieces to work on that were musically interesting for kids, so that once they mastered the notes, they would enjoy playing it for themselves and for friends.
