Overview:
Hi there this is Ian. I began taking clarinet lessons at the age of 12 years old. From then on I branched out to other instruments including guitar and piano. I have been the lead vocalist of Rock bands including Graffiti NJ and S.T.O.R (The Sun Thugs of Rebellion). I studied under various teachers including Danny Roselle (Crash moderns) as well as Dave Feddoc, Chris Bloom, Gene Segal, Igor Ramos, and Stephen Hart (Les Miserables, Metallica Philharmonic Orchestra). In 2013 I graduated from William Paterson University with B.A. in Music Studies with a minor in music management. In 2012 I completed an in depth internship with 5 time Grammy award winner Glen Velez. Music is my passion because its fun and it is a life long journey where you keep expanding and learning more. I hope to pass on my knowledge that I have accumulated from years of lessons and university to students and friends.
EXPERIENCE
When I was 15 years old I began teaching to a few kids I knew from high school on guitar. I also began teaching my friend Max Kroll's little brother who was only in 3rd grade at the time. I continued teaching on and off for money and just for friends who wanted to learn throughout the last ten years. I believe like anything else teaching music lessons is about networking and keeping a positive reputation so students will refer me other students. I hope to teach students techniques as well as music that I have written and enjoyed playing over the last few years. I Compose music that is challenging and diffuclt to play and then teach people my compositions. Not everyone is musically gifted but not everyone that is musically gifted can harness their gifts. I hope to help students achieve their best musical capabilities.
METHODS USED
I believe in music lessons there must be a balance. Especially on an instrument like guitar. Lessons should consist of a list of certain things almost like a checklist. First there is warm up and tuning. To make sure you are warmed up and in tune there are exersizes I like to start with my students. Once they are feeling warmed up I like to move on to sight reading and notation reading (practiced and unpracticed material) as well as scales, intervals, and arpeggios. I believe every student will be on a slightly different skill level and want to accomplish different goals. I am very goal oriented and with music I want to help my students practice, learn, achieve their goals, and most importantly I want them to have fun and enjoy playing music.
LESSON STYLE
For my teaching goals I like to help my students learn the instrument from the basic fundamentals. I believe music is like building a house and it is important to start with fundamentals in order to construct a strong foundation for musical knowledge. I like to teach proper technique and playing standards so my students will learn correctly and not have to go back and relearn things and relearn their technique. I like to teach them the correct way so they have the proper foundation to branch out and broaden their musical horizon. Every student is slightly different so I like to assess each student on their needs, goals, skill level, and preferred teacher's style.

Ian has been working with my son for 2 -3 years now and it has been a great experience all the way around. I appreciate the longevity and consistency of the lessons. He works great with me as a parent, keeps my updated on my son's success, etc, and works great with my son who is a teenager. I think my son values Ian as a teacher, and mentor and friend. Ian's knowledge and abilities are impressive. I would highly recommend him.

I have first saw Ian K winning battle of the bands back in 05'. I was amazed by his guitar skills and unique style. Moving forward, in 15' I decided to pick up and learn to play guitar. Contacted Ian K and we worked together for about a year and a half. He was very patient, serious, and knowledgeable about his guitar fundamentals. He is also funny and that makes the lessons enjoyable and I looked forward to them. With Ian K's help, I achieved my dream of learning to play the guitar.

Scotty was a great experienced teacher! Came on time every time. He has a lot of patience especially with my young son who is just learning. His caliber of play and experience rivals those of professional musicians. Very well knowledgeable of music in multiple instruments. I would highly recommend him over other teachers for the best experience possible! Thanks! -Fet Johnson.

Ian is great. He was very kind and patient with me. He also allowed me to split my lessons; spend half an hour with guitar and the other half with a voice lesson. He knowledgeable and I would recommend him to beginners.

I have been taking voice lessons from Ian for close to a couple years now and he has been fantastic. Throughout the course of our lessons I believe I have gained much knowledge and skill on how to harness my voice. Lessons are laid back yet productive and are never without laughs. A truly unique teacher who has opened my eyes to new music and abilities of which I never thought myself capable. Highly recommended.
