I use these series until a student has progressed enough at the fundamentals of playing that specific functions can be addressed. At that point, I will begin to split instruction into flow studies, flexibility, tone, air movement, and articulation, drawing from a variety of books created by some of the world's leading brass musicians. For beginning students, I start with a method book that provides them with both aural, visual, and kinesthetic instruction, such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. In addition to work in the method book, I work with my students to develop a curriculum that is high individualized and caters to their needs and, more importantly, their interests. I will test range via keyboard and show activities concerning different diction exercises and breathing techniques. Every student has different learning needs and I tailor my lesson pace around them. I start out with the basics: Major Jazz Scales, Mixolydian Scales, and Minor Scales, Teaching students the importance of playing long tones is constantly enforced . Simultaneously, students learn how to outline the Blues, and transcribe solos. For more advance students, I teach jazz phrasing, intermediate jazz song outlining and jazz enclosures.
