I began my teaching career with seven years of teaching students with multiple handicaps and moved in 2001 to my current postion where I teach from pre-k through third grade. I have a tried and true set of vocal building exercises (also known as "warmups") that I use with all of my students. These exercises help to strengthen students middle voices, extend their ranges, increase their agility, and increase their stamina. I combine these exercises with carefully assigned repertoire to promote growth and functional freedom. I love to have my students sing in many different genres because our voices are muscles, and I believe that they should be cross-trained so one can be as versatile and flexible as possible. Violinists and violists are often taught according to a traditional teaching method that is too rigid and outdated. In contrast, I design my lessons to fit each of my students' individual artistic goals, and encourage students to ask questions. For my younger students I prefer using the Faber method books as well as "A Dozen A Day" for finger technique and dexterity.  For intermediate and older students I introduce repertoire pieces in addition to leveled method books by Alfred. As my students progress I introduce classical pieces as well as suitable pop pieces based on their interest My older and adult students tend to be more goal oriented in their learning so lessons are developed based on their in individual needs.
