My method of teaching will both implement teaching students how to sight read but also more importantly how to play music by ear. I am very big on learning by ear because it is the way I learned music most of my life. For younger students I do want them to start learning how to sight read at a basic level because it will make it easier for them in the long run. Read More

Piano Students: I work only with beginners and I use Suzuki Method supplemented with songs of the student's choice. Voice Students:While the basis for my vocal technique is rooted in the classical Bel Canto tradition, my students do not end up having a "classical" sound (unless that is what they want). I firmly believe in the value of training versatile singers. We work on text analysis, and performing techniques that are specific to the style the student wishes to sing in. Read More

For Voice Students: I start each lesson with 10-15 minutes of vocal warm-ups and scales. The remainder of the lesson revolves around vocal pieces that either I think would be a good match for the voice, age, maturity, and ability of the student, or preparing a student for an audition or performance that they would like to perform a specific piece for. I also like to incorporate sight reading and ear training into my lessons, especially as the student grows into their voice. Read More

I have been teaching beginner students and children privately for the last 5 years. I have been freelancing as an organist, pianist, chorister and cantor all over Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts for the last 7 years. I particularly specialize in early music - from the Middle Ages through about 1780. I have particular love of early keyboards - clavichords and harpsichords, specifically. My vocal experience has helped and extensively continues to help my keyboard-playing AND keyboard-teaching. Read More

I believe that you never stop learning. Even when you are teaching. Thus I am not the teacher to show up without my own equipment and sit quietly while on plays what I gave them the week before. Everything will be done together. Iron sharpens iron. Goals will be realistic but challenging. Each session will include a review of everything else that's been worked on. Read More

Currently I am not teaching beginners. I start with whatever the books they have and experience and preference of music they have. I also bring copied music to introduce them to different styles of music to see what they would be interested in and what they need to work on technically and musically. I also ask them, "what is your goal to take piano lessons?" to set a personal goal for each student to make mile stones to achieve their goals. Read More

I use the score to pose questions about the way musical material is organized, how it reflects the composer’s ideas, and what makes the score coherent to the player and the listener. In this way, a score is one point of focus for developing interest and a questioning attitude—practices that will serve students for a lifetime. I believe that our ability to talk about music emerges from the experience of “thinking music” as performers and that we truly learn music by using its grammar. Read More
