Overview:

I have been teaching since I was 12. My parents' friends would ask me to teach them guitar! My degrees are in Theater, Music and English, and my Master's in Education from Harvard University taught me that everyone learns differently. I had the opportunity to study with Professor Howard Gardner, who developed the theory of Multiple Intelligences. Some of us learn visually. Others are far more tactile. And then there are students who hear and play by ear. I work to determine how best you learn, and then we move in your direction. I am left-handed and have learned to accommodate as well as individuate. My idea about life is that anything a person wants to learn CAN be taught. What is required? A deep desire and patience. But there is nothing as exciting as playing an instrument! Or learning to sing, and feeling the power that comes when you express yourself.

EXPERIENCE

A performer, producer and songwriter, Feef M. has worked with Zomba Music, Yamaha Music Foundation, Rondor/Almo Music and Universal Music, and has recorded twelve albums, which range in genre from Folk to Rock to Americana. After leaving the major music industry, Feef developed Music For Life Coaching Studios, where she began teaching guitar, bass, piano and voice, and focusing more on producing a sound that utilizes a mishmash of musical styles. A multi-instrumentalist, Feef played every instrument on her last album, “The Last of the Cartoon Vagabonds,” with some assistance from drummers Jamie Douglass and Adam Steinberg, and mixer Matt Forger, chronicling the adventures of eccentrics and misfits in a world full of danger, intrigue and longing. Feef has performed in church sanctuaries, the subways of Boston, London, New York, and entertaining audiences in small Scottish, English and Irish pubs, major music venues across the West Coast, and in major concert halls in the UK. She represented the UK, playing with her band, as part of the Yamaha Music Foundation World Festival, outside Tokyo, Japan.

METHODS USED

I create my own lesson plans. But I create after having related to my client. How you learn determines the plan. My preference is to teach to the song. I like my clients to pick four to five songs to learn. We need goals, and there is nothing better than being able to play a song you love, and sing it too! I teach beginning guitar and piano as well as bass. So we study chords and rhythms, as they relate to the songs the client enjoys. I like to insert a five to ten minute practice before digging into the main lesson. This involves playing scales or running chord progressions or learning about, for example, the circle of 5ths or 4ths. I do teach more advanced levels, in which we learn how to substitute chords and arrange songs. I alwyas build goals into a program as it feels really good to achieve and move on to the next goal!

LESSON STYLE

My approach is highly structured. We might start with warm-ups. This can mean, for example, Hanon exercises on the piano. Or playing scales on the guitar. I like to set tempos and practice rhythm as we run scales and chords. Sometimes I use a beat box. I believe in getting the client playing. I play only to demonstrate. I can also be a side player, and play a rhythm part, if the client is playing a solo. We need a very solid foundation, so I find ways to bed inthe foundation, while concentrating on the goal of building up a song repertoire.
