I take the great things about the Suzuki Method and use them (fun, creativity, by-ear learning, group jams). Then I take the things I don't like about the method and disregard them (pre-established repetoire, no composition or improv). I teach kids how to concentrate, how to teach themselves, how to ignore distractions, and the philosophy for joyful performance without nervousness. The result has been that I have trained hundreds of children to have fun playing music well, plus four of my child students have become national acts. Read More

I believe patience and consistency are key to successful learning. I try to model these qualities for my students. My goal is to create an environment in which effective student practice becomes a part of the daily routine, so that once students come to lessons we can work together to solve the musical problems the piece presents. Students bring their enthusiasm and I bring my supporttogether, we learn to interpret and create the music. Read More

I began teaching as a teenager when I was in Ann Arbor's psychedelic rock band SPROTON LAYER. I have taught friends and family off and on for many years. One of the hardest things to get across to the Student is that the single most important thing to do is Play. Read More

Music is my calling in life. My career in teaching started 30 + years ago and it has truly been a pleasure to see my students light up when they learn the songs they love. I started by offering private lessons in 1992 and soon had many requests from other students. I offer lessons for both electric and acoustic guitar as well as piano. Along with instrumental lessons, I teach music theory workshops for song-writers and music engineering workshops for musicians. Read More

For beginner students, I would definitely use Hal Leonards Essential Elements for trumpet (Books 1-4). It is always best for new students to start with identifying the notes and the rhythms, along with learning some fundamental exercises to fully master the trumpet. For more advanced/intermediate students (7th or 8th grade), I would start by giving out solo pieces to better prepare for solo and ensemble competitions, all the way till their final year at high school.
